Synthetic Tranny Oil?

What should I put in a 968 6speed manual, It's not particular to a different weight/type is it? I believe I have an open dif, but I'm not sure, does this really matter? I'll lift the rear end when I get home and find out. An LSD will spin in opposite directions, right? Or is that an open dif...?

IF you have M220 option indicated on the sticker located in the trunk so you have a locking Diff , much of 968 have torsen locker so there is no need , in my point of view , to use additives like in conventionnal disc/clutch locker.
IF your car is early 93 with M220 you maybe have the old locker diff.

I have the 220 option in my 89 S2. So, it's the clutch type LSD with 125k miles on the clock. If I was to go with FM mix and match, to establish the FM upper bound, how much FM would need to be added to make the 75W90NS(GL5) the same as the 75W90(GL5)?? Or, would I be better off just using the 75W90(GL5) from the start. My focus here is primarly street use. Rule of thumb anyone ??

*BUMP*
I've got a 968 tranny that I'm not sure what type of LSD It is or even if it is LSD. Are there any codes on the transaxle that tell? I can't check the trunk code sticker because the tranny is not the original. I've got the rear wheels off the ground and they spin opposite each other in gear if that helps, I never can remember which differential this signifies. What oil should I use? I've got some Mobil-1 synthetic 75W90 (GL5) and I don't want to use it if it's going to hurt anything.
Sleep? Yeah I slept yesterday.

Go find a track and do some "testing"

A torsen LSD will do what you're describing, which was introduced during '93 and used every year thereafter.
A clutch type LSD was used in '92 and part of '93, that type of LSD will spin the wheels in the same direction.
So basically...you need to find out if it's LSD or not, either by going to the track and seeing if you spin the inside rear coming out of a corner...or get the transmission code off the casing. I'm not sure where to look on the tranny...but I figure it's gotta be on there somewhere..
good luck..

I have tried both Redline 75W90 (GL5) and MT90 (GL4) and I can definately say that my transmission shifted better with the GL4 lube. I use my car primarily on the track. As Skip mentioned, Redline recommends to stick with the GL4.

If it is feared that my syncros are a little worn, should I stick with dino or can I use synthetic? The last tranny oil change that I did revealed some small metal shavings. This was about 6months ago and I haven't noticed anything wrong with the tranny; put dino in the last time. However, now my reverse gear makes a slight noise when it is engaged as well as when powering the car in reverse. Any thoughts?
Redline, Swepco, or use heavier weight dino like 80W140?

Roberto,
If you have LSD both wheels will turn in the same direction. If you have an open diff they will turn in opposite directions when spun from underneath the car.
Nicolas,
Roberto could look all day long at his factory option sticker and it wouldn't tell him squat about his tranny. He has done a 968 engine/tranny swap into his 944.

From the Mobil gear oil data sheet:
"Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant is suitable for all automotive applications where lubricants meeting API Service GL-5, are recommended. It can also be used in rear axles where an API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended. It should not be used in any transmissions requiring an engine oil or automatic transmission fluid, or GL-4 performance level."
I don't know if this would apply to a 944 transaxle... I went with Red Line MT90 GL4 which was under $10/qt. No extra FM was needed to quiet a very noisy LSD.

I've been using Redline MT90 in my '83 LSD for about a year. At first I couldn't tell a difference. I gradually became aware of a difference that I think is the syncronizers grabbing sooner. Seems to work well in any case.
