Yup. I have this at my desk at work.. I took this picture this past summer.

The first comment was "So, your car is the one that doesn't look like an electric shaver"

I thought it was funny that the model who's layout most closely matches the new car is left out or barely perceptible.... The 944 just doesn't project the right image in terms of snob appeal....

You would think they would fill in the gaps with 944s since they're cheap "extras" for the commercial!

Porsche hasn't really done much designing at all. The 911s are just a series of updates; and both the Cayenne and the Panamera are attempts to take the 911 look and stretch it onto a larger car. You could say that the 944 was the last clean-sheet design by Porsche -- except it was by Volkswagen!

so vw designed the body? who was the engineer who actually did it on paper first... the design history of the 944 would be an interesting tv show on the history channel...

Cool commercial even if the 944 was in the background. Travis's picture shows two in my eyes. I think the same red 951/S2 zooms by later on.

porsche designed the 924 for volkswagen, then bought the rights to the design when vw didnt want to do it. 924 did ok in sales but porsche decided to modify it and made the 944 using 924 as a base.

the cayenne and panamera are not about stretching a 911, i really dont think youll find many common parts between the two. certainly they have a visual similarity but that is the "brand face" just like VW, chevy, pontiac, mercedes, bmw, and basically ever other brand use on their cars.

I got it backward. Porsche designed the 924.

I didn't suggest that there was any part commonality between 911 and Cayenne / Panamera. They just borrowed the look. Problem is, the 911 is a small, rear-engined performance car, and the look of the face is very much reflective of its configuration and mission. It's cartoonish to move that face onto SUVs and front-engine sedans.

As an example, the R8 only borrows a couple of styling cues from an S8 or a Q7. I suppose Porsche is a little trapped. If they put anything with a grill on the front, it's going to look like anything but a Porsche.

even the 924/944 profile looks similar to a 911 or 928, bigger back, similar roof to hatch to hood curve...

You realize that if you inflate out the cost of a 951 new it is in the $80-90k range of today's dollars.

Which means that today's $100K Porsches are in the same relative price point.

Well.....I would say the 928 is the closest to the Panamera V8 GT Touring car. There were some pretty obvious 928s in there.

I have noticed this as well the basic hood, roof and hatch line flow very similar to other Porsches from the side view.

Wow, that making of was cool. I thought when I viewed the commercial that the cars were mostly CG a'la Fast & Furious and Speed Racer movies. It's amazing they got those awesome cars together.

So what if you barely see the 944 if at all (I think I saw my guards red n/a at 29 secs). Do we have an inferiority complex or not? I don't.

They haven't make a real Porsche since the 993. I don't even care so much about 911's being air-cooled or not... my issue is with quality and attitude, as both have been poor for some years. There's a reason why 996's can be found for under $20k all day long, while many older 911's are going for the same price or more. Multiple types of possible catastrophic engine failure without warning, combined with no factory parts to rebuild it is what has kept me from buying a 996 or a Boxster.

Funny, my wife is what has kept me from buying a newer Porsche...

I would be all over a GT-2 or GT-3, but she doesn't want that kind of car payment... everything else we have is paid for...
