Looks good.

Could someone give a rundown of the consequences of sucking in the hot air from around the engine (if any). It looks like a really logical, good idea.

Good work on the creativity.

Ecpunk -

If you're sucking in hot air from the engine compartment, technically speaking you're not extracting the most amount of power you could from the car.

There's a fine line here though. The additional air you're ingesting could potentially offset the heat-loss, giving you a slight net gain in power.

A perfect intake would be getting ice cold air from outside the car, with little to no restriction on it.

What this gent has done is modify the airbox to function almost like a cone filter. More air, better flow. The cone filters seem to also take in a lot of hot air too, but some people notice a seat of the pants improvement.

HTH!

it's hard to get cold air since the pre-filter side of the box is the shallow side. on the vw's, the deep side of the box is the pre-filter side, plus you only drill the fender side (away from engine) of the box, where fresh cold air is coming in from around the headlight.

basically on our cars all you get is a little extra roar when you get on the gas...

I think the red/orange paint has got to go.

Further... why did you paint the hose? <img src="graemlins/icon107.gif" border="0" alt="[icon107]" />

Cut Out Idea = Good
Paint = No Bueno

IMHO, If you painted the screen that you installed in the cut out red, then I think it would look much better.

You know, you get a lot of airflow through the engine compartment. Here is a picture I posted a couple days ago:

The arrow on the left point to a huge opening above the radiator and to the left (in the picture) of the headlight. This opening is really big and is exclusive of the radiator, meaning it does not flow hot air from the radiator. It does however source its airflow from the same outside source as the radiator. This is the opening for the ducting to cool a 924 alternator by the way. This opening is in addition to the one in the fender from which the intake usually draws outside air.

Why do I bring this up? To point out that a ton of cool outside air flows into the area around the airbox or cone filter. This air flushes the hot air out of the engine compartment as well as feeds the motor. Sitting still at idle obviously a lot of hot air fills that area, but once you get moving it gets flushed out. There is not a lot of excessively hot air in there when you are moving.

I may have to do some experiments with a thermometer to prove my point. I'll keep you all up to date if I do.

My bet is that the factory did it right and there are no horsepower gains.
This modification is technically "cupping" the air box, except it's just ONE BIG HOLE, but it serves the same purpose.

I think cone filters look cool, but do not draw COOL air, at least not until you are moving fast enough to vent hot air out.

Esthetically, a red air box, with a yellow screen rimmed by the black would remind me of a cloissone
(sp.) crest and stick more with this guys nice looking burgundy paint.

I think until you add a mass air kit to your car, that barn door will be the one constant air inlet restriction, nevermind the temperature!

And by the way, in the garbage pail is a tube - isn't that the one that attaches to the tube to draw cool air from the fender well to the alternator ?????????

Great idea and outstanding job on your cloissone cupped box !!!!!!!!

Nice creativity with the crest shape. What is that screen made of though. That looks like the stuff on the backs of my dining room chairs, I think it is called decorative caning.

Another advantage to the hole is that now you don't have to take the airbox apart to see whether or not your filter needs changing. Good job.

Have a similar mod, sounds amazing, and throttle responce is up a bit (combine with a round throttle cam and you have some pretty descent responce, I was very pleased)...
