SOB the cd with my install pics is at home!!!

ok i will try to explain the best i can but it might be a little confusing wihout pics. i go home on the 21st of march so thats when the pics will go up.

alright what i did was make a sealed enclosure using the wheel well as a box.
the wall of the well closest to the front of the car seemed weak, the rest seemed strong. since it seamed weak i made a peice of wood to fit flush against that wall. so the walls of the box are made out of 3 sides of the wheel well and the peice of wood. the bottem uses the wheel well also. the top is a peice of wood. also there is a peice of wood seperating the chamber into 2 sections, one for each woofer. to secure the top on i made 2 peices of wood that fit in the indentations on the top sides of the wheel(pics will be needed) there is a little drain hole on the bottem, i found a plastic plug that fit perfectly at a local hardeware store. before i screwed the top on i a;lmost 2 tubes of caulking to seal and glue evrything in. dosent help too much but as soon as i can get the pics it will be clearer

here is the best i can do right now

I have twin 8" Bazooka bass tubes mounted behind the folding section of the rear seat - used 2" nylon webbing, so it is easy to remove for storage, DE, etc. You can see the photos Twin Bazooka Bass Tubes in my Rennlist Gallery photos below.

Paul C,
YOu didn't make that box out of particle board, did you? I hope not. After a few hours of playing your stereo that 8" sub will tear particle board apart. You should never use less that 3/4" MDF (medium densisty fiberboard) when constructing a box.

The box looks good though. What make/model woofer did you use?

Red 9 Four Four, I'm currently in the process of doing something similar to what you've done, except with fiberglass.
Did you have to cut the Spare tire hold down out of the car to get the subs to fit? The subs I chose are Soundstream Davinci 10's and since they are so huge (for a pair of 10's) I might have to cut them out. Rewelding them in place shoudln't be too difficult.
I dynamatted everything in the rear of the car, then decided the same thing you did about the forward facing wall of the spare tire well (seemed weak). Instead of wood, I used fiberglass to create my enclosure. The process was remarkably simple, and it will be totally undoable with no major mods with the exception of removing the spare tire hold downs. The problem I am running into is cabling. I can't figure out a good way to run speaker wire into the box without creating a possible air leak (10 guage speaker wire is huge). Like you, I will be using a lot of caulking to seal up the enclosure, and I am trying to design some custom fiberglass amplifier mounts for the cubby holes at the rear of the car. Problem is amplifiers (Soundstream Pic4.480 for the fronts and rears and Soundstream Pic1.900D for the subs) are awfully large and might not fit well. If anyone has mounted amps in these locations, pics or ideas on custom mounts would be appreciated.
Once all is done, the fiberglass will be finished in Guards Red to match the exterior of the car.

from the very first pic, it appears that this box was assembled using glue only... that kind of construction really isn't going to be able to handle much air pressure inside without leaking. if you drive that sub with a big amp you will just be blowing air through those cracks and wasting power. for good performance of a bass driver it is imperitave that its inclosure be sealed really well. leaking air not only reduces the amount of bass, but it also screws up the response of the driver which is designed to have a certain amount of sealed air behind it acting like a spring pushing on the back of the speaker.

i also can't imagine that wood & glue & a plastic cap over a drain hole are forming a perfectly airtight and rigid inclosure for those 2 12's... fiberglass or thick mdf (glued & screwed) are the only way to go...

I used 3/4 mdf glue and nailed(air gun)and clamped, this box will definitly not shake itself apart! The woofer is an 8 inch pioneer. It was also sealed on the inside. It was one of the most effcient ones I found.

Pioneer's subwoofers reach deep into the bass response for excellent low frequency performance. They use a dual voice coil design that combines the left and right channels into a single speaker.

Mfr's # B20FU20-52D Pioneer

Freq. Range (Hz) 32-800
Power Capacity (Watts) 60/120

Voice Magnet Weight 20 oz.
Coil Dia. 1 1/2"

red9four4, how do you like the Audiobahn subs? I am going to be getting some 12" subs but am having some trouble trying to decide. I am thinkging about some Infinity Kappa Perfects, but the Audiobahns seem like a better deal, I just have never heard them.

But there should be enough room to "rest" it on top of the bass tubes. Not so sure if that is too safe however, as it would not be too good in an accident!

If anyone would like pics of the setup I'm using, e-mail me. I built two seperate speaker boxes that each hold a Polk audio 8" sub (that only required .33 cubic ft. of box space). Each box is located in the foot-wells of the rear hatch, and allows for a completely hidden install. I had these boxes in my old 951 (R.I.P.), and moved them over to my new one. They sound excellent. 2 8" in such a small car could be too much for some, but not for me! Anyway, if I took pics but don't really have enough room (or time) to drop them all up here on rennlist to hold.

I have a truck box 12" with kick comp in my car as of now. Tough soon we are taking on the task of fitting 2 MTX 6000 12" subs into the trunk of my cabriolet. I have a friend doing this work for me he is a very good box constructor (fiberglass) witch is what will be in my car all custom made of course. This will be powered by a MTX 2 channel class D amp with my blaupunt headunit w/10 disk remote and current infinity speakers 4x6's. If you guys are looking for a great install at a low price please contact me and I can get you intouch with my friend.
