Post 951 stabilizer bar recommendations?

Thinking of upgrading suspension on stock 951. Front tires 205/50/16 rear 225/55/16 (I think -- they are stock and I would keep the tires stock sizes).

Anybody got any stabilizer bar recommendations and also sources for a decent price? I will probably stick with the rubber bushings as the urethane I've had before was a bit hard. I thought I read where there was some material between rubber and urethane, but I may have been dreaming!

I bought a nice 20mm 3-way adjustable factory bar from the Rennlist classifieds a while ago. Check there, on Ebay, run a wanted ad on rennlist. The one I got is factory part number 477 511 415 so a dealer might be able to order one.

I just upgraded my rear sway bar in my 944S2 from 16mm to the 968 M030 3-way 19mm bar. I left the front one alone.

I'll be going to Watkins Glen for DE in a little over a week: it will be my first track day with the upgrade. I attended an autocross with the new bar, but can't say if it was the sway bar or the little rocks at the new parking lot that made my car exhibit more oversteer.

In real world driving, the difference was not noticable. I have the sway bar on the middle setting.

What is it that you are trying to achieve with the sway bar upgrade? What will you be using the car for: autox, track or street?

Also: if you are searching for more traction, you can upgrade the tires to 225/50 ZR16 front, 245/45ZR16 rear. I have done that upgrade and it helps understeer and makes turn in more crisp. (I have stock size 7Jx16 front 8Jx16 rear wheels, probably the same as you, based on your stock tire sizes).

Hope this helps,
-Zoltan.

I drive mine on the street . I was just looking to cut down on some of the body roll. I don't really have too much problem with the tires gripping, and on occation going around the corner I've had slight contact with the rear tire -- hence not really hot on going to bigger tires. I'm running the 16" optional Fuchs -- I think they are also 7's and 8's.

Also, doesn't the M030 setup have a larger front bar as well. Is there some place you can get the M030 setup other than the dealer. I just read e-bay is having some significant fraud problems and even some here have reported problems.

Anyway I'm OK with the traction, just the body roll I think is excessive (a bit).

Dercupster,
That was for the rear -- was it not? What are you running on the front?

The front M030 sway bar (forgot the size) is about $240.00, while the rear bar costs $180, including the bushings.

One recommendation: if you are going to upgrade the front and make it firmer, you really should upgrade the rear to be at least as firm as the front, otherwise your car will exhibit massive understeer!

I purchased my sway bar from a local indepentant Porsche shop: Powertech in Rockaway, NJ (www.pwr-tech.com). You can probably buy it from them, and they can ship it for you. Just tell Andreas that I sent ya! OR, you can check with your local Porsche dealership.

Kenny, I think my original 968 bars were the same as what your stock bars are. I replaced them with the 968 M030 bars F & R, and am _real_ happy with the set-up for street driving. I'm running new OEM replacement shocks & struts, and stock size 16" wheels & tires.

Cost was about $500 for both with bushings & shipping from Paragon. I think someone has posted a source a bit under or just over $400, but I don't recall who or where.

Installation is easy. Start with the rear bar in the furtherest (softest) hole, then adjust if needed after driving.

Jim, gone out to drop the starter & maybe do the clutch cylinders...

I just put the 968 m030 bars on my S2 the other week. *wow* what a difference. I didn't have much body roll to begin with..my Konis are set really stiff anyway but I definately noticed a big difference with these bars. Body roll is nonexistent basically, and the rear bar on the middle setting gets rid of the understeer almost completely.

I got the whole setup from Sunset Porsche for $345 delivered with all the bushings, both front and rear bars.

Not a bad price for what you get at all. I'm definately happy with it.

I have a 944 Turbo Cup Sway bar on my 944 (not a Turbo) and it works better than the Weltmeister bar that I had. Both are 28mm. I got mine from PAP in Atlanta, and I think it cost $175. It was used. PAP's phone is 1-800-944-2964.

I believe the 968 M030 front bar is 30 mm. I'd go to this setup in a second if auto-x rules would allow.

For the street, some roll is desirable, as it tips off your inner ear that the cornering limit is approaching (squealing tires will do this too). That new BMW 7 Series has active anti-roll bars that, IIRC, eliminate roll completely up to 0.5g, then allow some roll for this very reason. But you don't want the doorhandles scraping the ground on corners either!!!

The 968 MO30 is a great setup for most normal use. If have the trick one from Kokeln on my 951. Fully adjustible but expensive $650 or so.
