Default Speedometer/Tach Fluctuation - While NOT Moving

I have another question...

My project car has not been started in well over 10 years. I connected a power source to battery (trickle charger), then turned key on to see how much gas there was in tank (did not try to start car). The speedometer and tachometer started going up and down. The speedometer went to over 90 mph. Also, there was a ticking/elecrical sound from the frst injector. Anyone have any ideas????

THANKS
James

First guess, it is being caused by the trickle charger... get a fresh battery and see if the same problem persists...

The old electronics (specifically the DME) in these cars do not like the "dirty" power coming out of a typical battery charger. This is expected, and not a problem. Depending on the charger, I've seen/heard everything from clicks under the hood, gauges clicking because they are pegging high/low, buzzing from the cluster, and various odd gauge movements.

I try not to turn the key to on with any kind of charger attached. I can't tell you for sure its going to hurt anything, but it sure doesn't seem like the best idea. It's pretty easy to kill a DME in these things. They don't seem to have much voltage/noise protection in them.

Thanks to all who replied. I will give the battery a try within the next few days. I really hope that is the problem.

That was the problem....THANKS. I installed a new battery.

After I drained old gas, I tried to start it tonight. It will not start, it turns over, but does not start. I guess this is my next issue.

Standard troubleshooting: does the tach bounce when you start it (speed/ref sensors/DME), do you have fuel pressure (check the rail...even if its just seeing if you have ANY at all by pushing in on the valve to release some carefully), and do you have spark?
