As someone who valet's cars as part of my current job, I have only this to say: Don't valet your car anywhere if you expect the valet company to simply replace your car if anything happens. If your car is a rare, flawless example, you would be mad to let a valet company handle it.

Valet is for rental cars, and cars that are common and cheap.

I'm still amazed at how some people valet some really nice sports cars.

I've never trusted the valets, I'd rather park it myself.

Yes, DON'T valet a rare car. A very good friend of mine in high school was a valet at the finest hotel in N.O. They used to take all the nicest cars, Testarossa's, Lambo's, 911's, etc. after they were checked in. They would take them all through the French Quarter and dog the **** out of them. They also took them to the back of the lot and raced them. He was never involved in an incident like this, but could have been easily. Be careful...

I stated this before, but NOBODY touches my car. I've barely let the wife drive it (she pressed and I gave in).

Last fall before I put it away my wife and I visited a trendy upscale Italian restaurant on the shore of Lake Michigan and they had a valet service. Of course the guy wanted to park my car and when I said no thanks, another guy (must of been a "senior valet parker" lol) said I'm sorry sir... you may park it right here by the door.

Pretty cool and it was away from everything else. You could say it was the special spot for nice cars. I was happy, the wife was irrited but the Jazz (it was a personal friend of mines Jazz trio that was playing) inside was great... dinner was so so

That just sucks, that poor 928!

Whenever I parked my 944 in Beverly Hills, I didn't trust the valet, but they always let me park her right out front, where I could see it, and where the booth had an eye on it.

I also found tipping after parking it myself usually kept other cars at a distance from it.

Hmm I need a summer job, maybe I should become a valet. Then I can "park" and "exercise" my dad's cars when he drops by.

"My name is not Ferris Bueller."

Haha that's great. But seriously this kind of crap sucks and it's unbelievable how far companies will go to keep people from their rightful money when it's their damn fault.

In many New York City parking garages though there's simply no way that they'll let you park your own car! So I guess sometimes you just have to trust...

Well, to be honest, I recommend NOT ever valeting any really valuable car, although at my Hotel, it would be pretty safe. We are extra vigilant with the exotic cars. But either way, if a freak accident DOES occur, you can't replace an irreplaceable car!

Also, when the Molson Indy was in town, they self-parked the Dodge Viper ACR Pace Car, in the parkade. Nonetheless, I got to bring it up a couple times by asking the Dodge rep.
