Going rate on clutch repair (924S)?

Seems like an easy thing to search for but I couldn't find it. Possibly looking at a 924S that is excellent but "needs a new clutch" and want to get a feel for how much to "discount" the price. Let's say an independent shop does the work (I don't think I want to tackle that just yet). I had the clutch replaced on my '88 944 (at a dealership, no less
) but I don't remember the cost. Not to mention it was 10 years ago....
Thanks!

IIRC, the 924S has the 2.5 NA, so my experience with an early 944 may pertain (same clutch???). This was the only job I paid to have done on my car. I provided all of the parts, and the labor came to something just south of $1200 (last summer). I also paid for new speed and reference sensors to be installed (~$250). This was at a reputable and high quality Porsche shop.

i got quoted between 1600-2200 for LABOR... do yourself a favor and do it yourself. all you need is a jack, 4 jack stands, a pretty basic set of wrenches, and 3-4 days.
i had NEVER tackled a job anywhere close to this before, but i got it done in two weekends, learned a lot, gained experience, a deeper appreciation for the car, and used the money i saved in labor to buy myself some coilovers from paragon

I think the book says 8-10hrs of labor. Yup.. Most shops near here are $100/hr. Plus another, likely $400-800 in parts. When i looked for my 944, I just figured to alot $2K for a shop to do the job. And no, I didn't have the desire to spend 2 weekends, under the car, learning to do it myself.

Thanks all. Looks like about $650 in parts and I think my wrench charges $80/hr labor. Not sure if his rates have changed.
Interestingly, Pelican Parts has a "delux" clutch kit package for just under $1000 that has about 9 different parts (more bearings, forks, etc than the usual 3-piece clutch kit).
I might try to look at the car this weekend. Its 2 hours away, so I have to decide if its worth the effort to (probably) have it towed here then fixed. Supposedly it is an otherwise perfect car. (i.e. no dash cracks, perfect interior, service records, etc.)
Things that make you go hmm...

If it's an '88 take a very good look at it. Higher compression, very desirable.

I think the book time is closer to 18 hours.
A good independent who has done a few clutches could
probably do it in 12 or so.
Get the complete kit
disk
PP
guide tube
new flywheel and PP bolts
clutch fork bearings
I'm sure you know the addage, a cheap Porsche, is not.

It would also have the shorter 5th gear ratio. Both make the '88s more desireable (although I wouldn't go as far as "very")! Have you seen the prices on 944 n/a's lately? It's ugly out there.

If the miles are even moderate, you might consider replacing any nearby seals (rear main?) while the bellhousing is off. It's hardly any labor and a good bit of piece of mind.

88k miles...yeah, I'm all about "while you're in there". I'd probably go with the $1k "super clutch kit" from Pelican.
"The complete 944 clutch package contains every little piece that you will need to perform the complete clutch replacement on your 944 or 968. Specifically, the package contains:
New 944 Pressure Plate
New 944 Clutch Disc
New 944 Throw-out Bearing
9 Flywheel Bolts
Pilot Bearing
2 Release Lever Shaft Bearings
Slave Clutch Cylinder
Flywheel Seal
Throw-Out Bearing Guide Tube
Clutch Alignment Tool
Clutch Master Cylinder
Our clutch kits come only with the improved 944 spring centered clutch disc, and are manufactured by Sachs, the Porsche OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) supplier of clutch components.
With this package, you will have everything you will possibly need to do a complete clutch job, and also have the security of knowing that you didn't forget something. You can eliminate the fear that you may need to tear open your clutch again because a small part has failed. The complete package is great insurance against having to perform more clutch work."
$956.35 for the 924S
