Default Broken Door handle

Do I need a completely new door handle or can I buy the insides only?

I went to open the driver door and heard a sound like something broke. I can reach in from the passenger side and open the door that way. I found a picture on Clarks-Garage of the inside of the handle.

I put left and right side on the part that broke. I looked at my other car's door handle and those two sides move together when you pull the handle. On the broken handle only the right side moves.

I circled a section of handle in red. Is this piece broken/missing?

Hi John,

No that circled piece is in tact and doesn't move on either the good door handle or the broken handle.

It is the pieces on either side of that part that are both suppose to move when you pull the handle. One side moves (right side) and the other (left side) no longer moves with it.

I have the Porsche script handles that is why I ask about changing the insides vs buy a new handle. The non-Porsche handles are so much less expensive.

Does anyone know if I can just unscrew the insides and move them to another handle.

I have been watching some on Ebay but they are not script

Your other handles are a direct replacement.
Before you change them, you might want to get the
plastic clips on the other end of the rod. I have feeling that's what
broke. It's a common problem as these cars age.

BTW, your car is looking great!!
Does Paul still have his?

It looks like I will just get the non-script handle from Ebay.

Yes, the Black is running great and it is the one with the broken handle.

Thanks

I bought the linkage from Pelican. Now my plastic clip is in perfect condition it was the metal that broke.
I removed the handle this morning. I have a feeling removing is alot easier than putting this back together. I did put painters tape all around the handle on the painted door area. I read where many have scrached their paint with the handle.

Does anyone have tricks to putting the handle back. Please share. Here is a picture of the broken piece.

Yep the same thing broke on mine. Then when putting the NEW piece back in I broke the part where it attaches to the handle itself. Now I have a broken handle. Be careful, it's pot metal. Totally crappy.

PS: Is that MOLD on your handle?

I ended up breaking the new linkage when bending the handle in odd angles trying to get it back into the car. I tore the metal like it was paper.

Luckily I bought two thinking I would have a spare when the other car had the same door handle breakage problem.

No not mold just faded from the sun I guess the metal is starting to show through.

Here is a picture of both linkages, left old original, right new torn. I hope to never have to do this again.

Second is picture my next project. I got them Ebay was not the original winner but the original never paid so I got second choice.

Replacing the handle is slightly more cumbersome than removing it, but the only tricky part is attaching the plastic socket from the new linkage to the metal ball.

I found the easiest way to do this was laying flat on my back looking up at the door lock and using a long flat head screwdriver to lever the socket onto the ball. You'll have to remove the door panel and stick the screwdriver through the holes in the sheetmetal. Good luck!

here's how I fixed mine for $5 using junkyard VW handles.

That's quite an ingenious solution, but why not just replace it with a used 944 handle?

Door handles get wet all the time (rain, washing, etc.) and I'd hate to put in extra hardware and drill holes that are prone to rust down the road.

If your hands are small enough you can reach up in there and put the ball end back together. Just make sure the linkage is the proper length. Replacing the part that you broke is pretty self explanatory.

Just a low buck option to make it functional. If you can find used 944 handles, that's ideal. But they're still not cheap. VW handles were $5 ea. Porsche handles are sold as if they're made of 14kt gold. It's kinda outragous, it's basically the same part.
You can re-use the same gasket to put the handle back on and/or or put a little silicon in there, and use stainless hardware to prevent rust.
