Apologies if this is covered by a FAQ - couldn't find anything, but if it is please point me there!
944, 1995, standard Euro spec, 140,000 miles. Recent (500mi) oil change, and yesterday I stopped to fill her up and she sounded like a diesel when I restarted. Clatter disappears at 2,500rpm, returns at 2,200.
Conrod little end gone? It's not deep enough for a big end, imo.
Are the 944 little ends pressed in or what? Haynes is silent on the subject.
Engine out job, anyway. O dear...
Any thoughts, advice, etc will be much appreciated!
Simon

I changed the oil; it's just on the top line of the dipstick. I too thought lifters at first, but it's too 'solid' a noise for lifters, I'm afraid. I wish it were, but...

Simon, Trans-atlantic noise diagnosis is beyond me, but here's an idea that may help.
If you have access to a mechanic's stethescope (like an MD's, but with a long, hollow tubular tip), try using it to narrow the noise source down....
If not, you can use a long screwdriver. Put the butt of the handle end against your ear tightly; touch the tip against various parts of the engine. Be cautious of moving parts like belts...
Your noise should come in loud & clear, especially if it's someting actually in direct contact with a part that forms the outer surface of the engine (like a lifter in the head / cam tower).
Jim, back to the ALMS race....
