shiftboot, dash replacement
#16
Made myself a new shiftboot with my late grandmom's old 1938 Singer sewingmachine...
This boot is better than factory original, since i used thicker leather.

The square retainer and E clip you're referring to allow the shifter to be removed from the car. You need to pop the cap if you want to replace the leather ONLY, and that's what he's asking.

I'm interested in ordering an OEM-style replacement, switching my shift boot from brown to black (to match my black 968 CS steering wheel).
Perf Products has a boot & **** for $80. Anyone know if this is a quality replacement?
Also, they say you must reuse your shift **** cap. Can we still order this part (ie. one in black) from Porsche?

No such luck. You have to buy the entire shifter assembly which of course is big $$$. I saw an ad in 911 & Porsche World from a company in the UK that sells a billet aluminum replacement. I can't remember what issue or the price but I'll look for it later. I made one for my car from a 2"x 2" Corian smaple piece.
Sorry about the crappy pic, all I've got is a $89.00 digital camera.

I don't know of anything wrong with 9xauto, but I asked a while back about another one of their products and was told to be careful with them.... not sure why though. I think it was more of a "performance" product, so it has nothing to do with cust. service or anything, but that's what I was asking.. does anyone have experience with 9xauto? I'd like to get some feedback..
OH and they do have some OEM stuff on the bottom of the page.. here's the link...
Go down to "shift ***** and recovery kits" then scroll to bottom of frame.

danny 951 that oem stuff looks good, EXCEPT does it come with the sift pattern cap or do you have to use your own? Mine could use replacement and there is nowhere to buy them.

dave do you live in USA or UK? Those are great replacements but a little expensive. If you are in USA with me how much did you end up paying in American $$$? Does anyone else know where to buy these in America?

I have made big progress on my interior restoration. The dash is almost ready to be pulled, and i have only one problem. I dont have a socket that will fit on the steering wheel retaining nut. Does anyone know what size nut it is? Also I found an add in the back of excellence advertising a company called www.aglausa.com which sells those shift **** caps for 10$. There is also a great dash up for bidding on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1843599069&r=0&t=0&showTutorial=0&ed=0&index URL=0&rd=1
I would buy it but 350 is too much for me to spend....

Does anyone have any pictures of a post 85.5 944 with a coverlay dash cover? Does it cover the WHOLE top section of the dash or just the part that cracks? I ripped all the vinyl off mine so I need it to cover the WHOLE top.

Hey guys whats up. I haven't posted in over a year so its been a while for me (med school). Anyways, as far as the shift **** goes, I ordered the one from Performance products and was very happy with it. Although it says in the catalog that you need the shift **** cap, this new **** already came with one. You don't need to order it seperatley. Its a black background with a chrome colored shift pattern. The only thing was that it took a while to get it as it was on back order. As far as the Coverlay Dashcover, I can't say. But I order the other brand, "DashCap" I think it was called, and have had it on my 83 for almost 2 years now and it still looks good. Its too bad most people have had bad luck with theirs and think its crap, this one still looks great. The shift **** and dash cap both pictured below.
Too bad I just sold my 83 2 weeks ago Looking for a 968 now.

I don't remember exactly whom I ordered it from. It was either Tweeks or Automotion (before they merged with Performance Products). It was a while ago so I don't know if they're still available.
