Ok, I'd start with my 968, replace the Variocam tensioner, all front belts & tensioner, & clutch.
Add LSD & M030, 17" wheels & big reds.
Next add one of the supercharger kits that allows A/C to remain functional.
Now swap out the front bumper cover with the one from the factory 968 turbo with the bigger center air inlet.
Then a fully professional prep & paint job changing it to an as-yet unselected shade of pearl white; new full-leather interior in tan.
I'll take the remaining $20K or so & invest it in the stock market...
Jim, and watch it dwindle to $10K in less than a year...

For $50k I'd get:
A nice, clean low mileage 968 coupe with M030, 6 spd. (About $25k)
A nice mid-90's Ford or Chevy Conversion van for around $10k
A good enclosed trailer ($8k)
That leaves a little money for the DE/autocross budget, as well as a professional driver's school like Skip Barber or Bob Bondurant.
Then the difficult choice would be which car (my 944S2 or the dream 968) would I turn into a track car.

Lots of 928 guys...Gotta love that V8 Roaring...
I would have to evaluate it between a few
First off, I love 928s as well, so perhaps a 94 GTS 5 Speed, add twin Turbos, lower compression and stroke it out to 6.0 (I think I can even go 6.4) Double adjustable Konis and the biggest Fikse's I could fit underneath it.
Or, as someone else has also mentioned
a 964 3.6 Turbo....drooool....I would probably try to keep this one stock though, as I think these will hold their value well for quite a long time...

A 968 tiptronic for the weekdays and a low mileage 87-89 911 Targa for the weekends and, eventually, the track. Amazing that you could easily buy these two incredible cars for $50k and get some change.
Of course if I found a clean 86-88 BMW M5 or M6 the weekday car might change...
Back in the '80s I dreamed of a Lancia Thema 8.32 - a beautiful, vicious Italian luxury sedan with a Ferrari engine.
Unfortunately the Audi S6 Avant sitting at the local dealer is $68k - a 340 hp quattro wagon!
It is dreams like these that make being a car nut so much fun.

the 928 GTS could be had for $50k but I think you will have a more difficult time finding a 964 3.6 Turbo for only $50k. I could be wrong but it will certainly be a "fixer upper". Call me crazy, but I am NOT a big fan of buying a $50k "fixer upper".
For $50k (if that is all I have to work with), I am assuming it's cash...I would put the whole $50k down on a 1996 or 1997 993 Twin Turbo and finance the other $25-$35k. Black, Arena red, or Silver in that order (black, grey or linen interiors)
If I didn't do that then I would look for a pristine 1989 911 Turbo (Black with linen) just like my last 911.

re: all them 928s, i guess you gotta love twice what we love, in the same block. but then again, if anyone has seen (or heard) the cars that devek (http://www.devek.net/) tests at the local pca autocross, it's enough to get goosebumps (550 Hp, 6.0l stroked, up to 200 mph) just standing next to one of those monsters... Damn those things are bad *** for big displacement!
all in all, a shame they didn't take over the "evergreen" 911.
second to watercooled cars, is my favorite: the '94 964 Turbo S, with the same headlights off of the 968! Awesome. But you're right, they are/were more than $50k. Brand new they were $160k, with 968 style lights, cost of factory mod: $60k, car itself, maybe $99k..

For 50K? A Powerhaus 968 Turbo S conversion. With some 18" 3-piece cup wheels.
Then, I'd sink the remaining cash into a Valentine One radar detector so I knew what direction my next ticket was coming from.....

You are forgetting:
-3.2 L bored and stroked motor good for 500 reliable HP on pump gas and 600+ on race fuel
-air (T66 or T70 turbo, tial wastegate, big *** BOV, 3.5" intake/intercooler tubing, custom intake manifold, big FMIC, 3.5" exhaust tubing from the turbo back, blah...)
-fuel, spark, and brains (72 lb injectors, custom fuel rail, big fuel pump, braded stainless fuel lines, RR adj. FPR, TEC3 for the brains and spark, greddy profec A for the boost)
-On board PC hooked up to pass. airbag mounted LCD touchscreen so you can change your TEC3 settings on the fly and require a password to start your car
-Entire body done in carbon fiber panels w/ 3" extention widebody so you can fit steamroller 13" rear and 11" front wheels
-dual master cylinder brake upgrade w/ proporting valve of your choice, stainless lines, etc.
-You are going to need lots of gauges (boost, air/fuel, oil pressure, water temp, oil temp, injector duty, big *** tach with a shift light, etc.) and a place to mount them (replace most of the stock gauges except the speedo with autometer stuff)
-coilovers on all 4 corners, MR electronic shocks, stiff springs, huge swaybars, all metal suspension bushings, solid motor and trans mounts, geometry correction package
-I would skip the fakemeout aluminum interior and get real CF dashboard
-I would also skip the 12 way power sport seats and get the 911 GT3 seats
-You are going to want at least a roll bar for that kind of car...maybe a full cage w/o the nascar style door so you won't look like a monkey getting in and out of it...don't forget the harnesses
And for all this stuff you might as well start with a beat up '86 or '87 turbo since everything that makes it an S will end up being replaced anyways...it will leave you more $$$ for mods.
That plus everything mentioned before is what I would do to my 951 if I had probably more than $50000 to dump into it. Anybody else have any additions?

Well, you could be right... But I was talking about simple mods! I REALLY meant what I posted though... Not trying to make a super-car, just a very nice (and unique) DAILY driver!!! With that in mind: no cages, no computers + touchpads, about 320-350hp total (give or take), like I said just simple everyday mods!

Well, I thought about this a bit more. Here it goes:
1. a low mile Amazon Green 968, bone stock for commuting, grocery getting, family outings. Must have 17" Cup wheels though and just let that color melt in your eyes. Budget $22K
2. An already completed Beck 550 Spyder, Artic Silver w/ 356 Allum. drum brakes and an dual carbed 1835 Type 1. Weekend go-kart for mountain drives (1200 lbs. dry weight, can really "hook and book") and high-styled trips out on the town. Budget $16K.
3. A $6K 951 Track car, whatever color as long as it's bright and can bee seen a mile away. Spend a year making it a competitive F class modif. racer. Budget 12K.
Things I think about in the shower

Hey, I am planning on putting a roll cage in my daily driver. It isn't that not simple.

Tabor,
I can respect that, however I already have trouble getting my gf to ride on my 89 na, on a 951 w/a cage I'd need a gun to get her to rid in it... You have to understand: as a child my dad gave me a kart when I was 9, now this was in 84' I was living in Brazil, and that baby had a gearless 125cc engine (good for some 100-120mph on a straight...at a hairs-length from the ground), factor in that I raced in those for some 5-6 years, when I am inspired I kind of forget that I am not in a track!!! (however I am VERY careful to do so when traffic is at a minimum, and the roads are somewhat empty (I live in S Fla... it happens every now and then...)
