Towing

Any car can tow just about anything. It's a question of:
1. Will you fry the tranny?
2. Will your brakes handle the load?
3. How many hills do you have to climb? (Will the engine be powerful enough?)
A 944 + open trailer is probably around 4,000 lbs. Most pickup trucks, medium SUV's (Explorers, Jimmy, Trooper, ML320...etc) have a 5,000 lbs tow capacity rating.
So, if it's mostly flat highway type driving, you can probably do it with little or no damage to the Wrangler.
Just my $0.42.

I'm actually buying the car and needed a way to get it home. A friend has the Jeep, and is letting be borrow it.
All I know is it is a four cylinder, I dont know the volume.

The 4.0L is a v6. I think the 4 cylinder is the 2.8L. I don't think it will be up to the task.

My friend said that the car had no problem pulling one of those big uhaul moving trailers, but I don't know how much those weigh compared to a 951. BTW it will be almost entirely highway miles.

I will be renting the trailer, but every place I looked at (uhaul, ryder, etc) will charge about 60 cents a mile. Any other regular car rental companies don't rent cars or trucks with hitches, so you can't tow.
If anyone has any other ideas on how to get this car it would be very helpful. The car is in PA, I'm in MA.

If you rent a U-Haul truck and trailer, they give a discount. Cost me $230 to move all my stuff and my car 200 miles. Of course your U-Haul will be empty, so that helps on gas and such.
Get some good tie downs. The ones that slip over the wheels with the U-Haul trailer suck ***. Let's say it was a good thing I had a person following me..... and a safety chain on the crossmember.
And.. I just remembered this.. I was going to get a truck and trailer to tow my car from Jersey to Cincinnati, and it was like $400. Not too shabby for an 800 mile trip. I would look into the U-Haul combo. Hell, if you blow it up, who the hell cares!

Probably the 2.5l inline 4 - crappy motor... don't even think about it. That thing barely hauls its own carcass.

Thanks for the help, Perry - I will look into that. The place I called didn't really seem to know what was happening, so I'll try another branch

find a friend who knows someone who works at budget. have him rent you a 24' box truck and a full trailor. drive it 400 miles. bring it back and pay nothing. thats what i did to get my porsche.
