This is not a 944 question but kind of a general engine question.
I have a e34 530i with the m60 v8.
I did a compression test, and the cylinder No1 (drivers side nearest firewall) has low compression 150 compared to over 200 on all the rest. When I put oil in there it comes up to around 185 which i believe to be the rings are gone. Also the plugs were pretty black.
I have smoke coming out which is whitish.
I am wondering if this is a head gasket and/or just rings. Teh car has never overheated.
The car has a great difficulty starting.
apologies not 944 related, but there is a lot of knowledge here and im not getting a lot of luck on the bmw boards.
Thanks a bunch.

The cross-hatched Nikasil linings react with the high sulfur content found in lower-quality gasoline, such as that used in parts of the United States. This reaction causes damage to the very top of the cylinder bore, where there is the most contact of the burning mixture and the cylinder lining. The damage prevents a good seal from forming between the piston and the cylinder wall, causing a loss of compression in the combustion chamber.

Do a leakdiwn test, listen to where it is hissing, that will tell you what is broken... oil filler cap will indicate rings, bubling in the coolany reservoir is head gasket, hissing in the intake is intake valves, hissing in tailpipe is exhaust valve...
good luck... where are you located, I am sure someone close to you has a leak down tester...
