Is it difficult to pull apart the cluster? Haynes says to take it to the dealer because it cannot be taken apart by the home mechanic. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

the cluster is really easy to take out

first take off the stering wheel, pull the horn pad off and undo the bolt holding on the steering wheel, i use a 15/16" socket because i dont have the 23.5mm or what ever it is, and the 15/16 works just fine.

then unscrew the 3 flat head scwers holding the turn signal controls on and pull them out, it is not necesary to remove them, just pull them out a little bit

next unscrew the 2 screws that hold the plastic trim on that goes around the steering colum and ignition. then remove those 2 trim pieces.

unscrew the 2 screws that hold the cluster in, they are in the top of the fuel/temp and tach holes.

before you go and remove the cluster, unscrew the spedo cable from the back of the spedo, the way i do it is put the seat all the way back, lay on my back on the saet, so that my head is next to the pedals looking up. reach around the computer(i think that is what the metal box is) i go around the right side(when looking up at it) and find the gauges(you wont be able to see the visually) and unscrew the cable that canects to the spedo dont worry it dosent take much force to unscrew it.

once that is done pull the cluster out enough to undo the electrical conections in the back.

then just pull the cluster out

to put them in just follow the reverse order, the 2 trim peices are a lillte trickey to get back in

hope this helps

I have had a lot of fun with this Haynes "manual", quite a lot remarks "take it to the dealer"
The funniest part of this book is how to adjust the belts. They also claim it covers all models from '83-'89, but there is not a single page of S,S2 or 951.I was very disapointed to that book, especially because it was wrapped to plastic folio and i was not allowed to examine it before i bought it.I returned it right away when i looked through it.It's total grab.

Question

So that's the little odometer gear that gets stripped so easily if people reset their tripometers while the car is moving?

Red9four4, I did the same fix two weeks ago (moved the little gear on the shaft). Mine lasted 6 days/59.9 miles, then quit again. Any ideas on getting the gear to not move down the shaft? A drop of super glue, a little piece of e-tape, the world's tiniest clamp??? I'm willing to pull it out one more time, but I want it to be the last time!

This fix appears to only be for the early (pre 85.5) cars. The gear that self destructs in the later cars is different, and someone correct me if I am wrong usually falls apart. That's what happened to mine. The only solution for the later cars is gear replacement.

Anyone know the guy who is selling the gear on ebay.

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1852050424&rd=1" target="_blank">Ebay Auction</a>

His first auction I ask him if he will ship to Canada, no reply, second one I ask him again, sends a note back, "read the auction" it says he would for $10.00 because he has to fill out custom papers to ship to Canada. Geeze, third auction, I bid, he cancels my bid - reason, "I won't ship to Canada, that was my last auction."

Same part, he's just mad because I didn't use Buy it Now. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

I'll take the cluster apart and hopefully the gear just slipped off it's track.

I may need a "friend" in the USA who will ship me the part.

What else could it be besides a destroyed gear or the slipped gear? I just took mine apart, and the gear seems to be in good shape, and it's in the right place.

On the early cars, it is possible to reach up under the dash and push the fuel/temp/idiot light gauge out through the front of the instrument panel. It can then be unplugged and removed and you can reach through the hole to get at the back of the speedometer. It also will push out the front.
I also put a little dab of super glue on the shaft to hold the gear in place.

Thanks guys! Sounds like the lack of super-glue is where I erred. Well, I know what I'm doing this evening...
