Default Which temperature thermostat to buy?

Last winter my temperature would only get to the first white line....thus the heater wasnt very effective. It runs at 9 o'clock during the summer. Would changing the thermostat to a different temperature model solve this issue? If so, which is best for a cold climate?

Thanks,

BO

I believe 80 deg C. (176 F) thermo is the stock configuration on late models (85.5 ->), not clear what model you have.

When I got my 968, I noticed that the temp was running pretty steadilly at the lower line. Last winter, I was driving it a bit in colder temps, and during that time, the heat was a bit inadequate. I figgured the PO had installed a lwer temp stat, so I ordered up an OEM spec 185deg. Whaler thermostat and set about replacing it.
When I removed the stat from the car, I noticed it was a 185deg Whaler and looked exactly like the new one in the box.
I took both inside, suspended them in a pan of water and added a thermometer. The old tstat started to open at 175 and was fully open at 185; the new one started to open at 185 and was fully open by 193ish.
Since I've installed the new one, the temp is steady at the middle, even in hot summer wather with the A/C.
I guess the point of this is that no matter what thermostat you buy, you should test it to understand how it works compared to the one you have.

+1 John. Until you actually check the therm, you have no clue where it actually opens. I've had 2 different 71 degree C therms, (low temps) the first opened at 77 degrees, the second at 71 degrees. Go figure, yup they were Wahler.

Interesting. Mine always runs at the 1st mark, and will bake you out of the car in the winter on full heat.

Better to be on the first line than the last...

But yeah, seems like an open thermostat. I always choose to go with the lowest temp thermo's I can get, just a preferance I guess. As I said Id rather have the engine running cold than hot.

I agree. Even with a low temp stat, I can bake anything in the car. Mine is an early car, runs a hair below the first mark in summer.

Always go for the stock temp. thermostat. The low temp t-stats will not allow the car to reach temp. and the car can have drivability issues as it will run rich. I know this to be very very true.
