Post Falken Ziex tires

Recently somebody (from Ohio I think) did a post on buying a set of these tires. Any body who has them how do you like them? They look good but from their price you have to wonder, about $60 per at Sears.

Only thing I've ever heard about them is how much they suck.

Check out this post over at Pelican:

Whay do you really think, Tim?
I bought a set of Falken Ziex 512's, 225/50/R15. So far I like them. They stick decent, are quiet, and have good wet traction. With any tire you have to experiment with your tire pressures a little. I just use the car for normal (?) street driving and find them way better than the Pirelli's that I had. They're not the greatest tire but for the price they're not bad. If I had the cash I would have gotten Bridgestone S-03's but for the driving I do these suit me fine.

Hehe, that isn't my opinion. I'm just passing on what I heard. The title of the topic about those tires was "Falken=TRASH". Thats why I used that as the hyperlink.

After having the second pricey Pirelli suck a piece of gravel thru the tread irreparably <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" /> , I decided to try cheap tires. The Falkens have been on about three weeks now, but I haven't had a chance to wring them out yet. For normal street driving they're fine, and quieter than the Pirelli's on worn concrete paving.

Jim.... and about $60 a tire cheaper...

I don't have any experience with the Ziex, but the Falken Azenis is quickly becoming the Street Stock Auto-X tire of choice at the San Diego PCA events. I've got a set and I think they're great...quiet, grippy, inexpensive, but they do most decidedly suck in the wet!

If you are looking for inexpensive tires, you might want to try TireRack now. I just bought a set of Yokohama AVS Intermediates for about $58 front and $60 rear. These are the stock 205/225 sizes for the 16" wheels. These tires are apparently being discontinued.

Great price with a solid performance history.

Hope this helps.

I had the Ziex on my Scirocco. They were very sticky and worked surprisingly well in just about every condition. They had a pretty short tread life however.

I've got the Azenis Sport, the asymetric SCCA street-class tire. See
<a href="http://www.falkentire.com/html/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.falkentire.com/html/index.htm</a>

Without a doubt, they are the best street tire I've ever used at the track. Sidewalls are stiff, tread doesn't chunk, consistent after many laps. A great dual-purpose tire, as they ride decent, are quiet, and work well when cold also.

But they are NOT a R-compound tire, so don't expect to say with the Kumho Victoracer shod cars on the track. How much slower they are than the Yoko A032R or Toyo RA-1, it's hard to say. I may try the RA-1 next, if for no other reason that the limited size availability of the Azenis Sport. (I really don't like the tall, narrow 245/45-17's on the rear.)

Agreed on the Azenis not keeping up with the R-compounds. Tread wear number on the Falkens is 200, versus 50 or 60 for, say, the Kumho Ecsta V700 Victoracers. So they should last a reasonable length of time.

At full tread depth, they're on the heavy side, but that's to be expected with such big tread blocks and so little void. I'm surprised at how quiet they are, seeing that the tread pattern looks similar to the Yokohama A032R, the noisiest tires I've ever had the displeasure of running on my car. <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />
