Question Smaller infant seat...or I have to sell the car!?

Now that I have a wife AND child, it seems I NEVER get to drive the 944, because when we all have to go somewhere, the infant seat doesnt fit into the back "seat" without pulling the front seat all the way up. So, the wife and child wont fit--defaulting me to the Taurus all the time (yawn)!

Is there a smaller/better infant seat that WILL fit in the back??

If I can't take the wife and kid with me in the 944, I'll have to sell it...what's the point of owning a car I never drive?

Help!

Hi, I'm not sure on an infant seat, but I do know that your child will not be an infant for the rest of your life. They grow, go figure <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Hang on and this will pass, and they fill fit when they are older. My .02

I have a feeling that you have a very young child and are using the rear facing, semireclining, car seat. If not ignore this.

If so-this is only a very brief (in retrospect) event and the upright child seats take much less front to back room. Besides, with all the legroom in the 944 pulling it up is a minor inconvenience.
Try at all costs to keep the car-once it's gone it's 4 doors, minivans and SUVs.

I survived that part of my life with two little ones. I used a CENTURY car seat with a tether to the rear cargo area.
For a short while I had two seats in the rear. Put the little one behind me (her legs were shorter).
Now they sit in the "built-in child seat".
We always had a second car for "family outings". I take the 944 to/from work, and play.

I had the same issue with the infant seat, I do not think that there is any way around this.

However, a regular forward facing child’s car seat fits much better. I do have to move the passenger seat up a little, but the passenger seat is still useable. When buying a forward facing seat, get one with the smallest base as possible.

I was not able to install this type of seat in the rear facing direction as I could not figure out how to get the baby in and out safely.

As an aside, the hook on the floor at the rear of the hatch area makes an excellent attachment for the car seat tether.

In NC, the law is that a child has to be 1 year old to use a forward facing car seat.

Get one of those small dog harnesses they use for putting them in the back of pickups and just strap the kid into one of the back seats!!!

Well, actually before the child's seat safety laws changed there were a couple of smaller seats that did fit. Also found we could sit the small kid seat on the hump between the seats an use an "additional" seat belt. This would go from the regular belts across the middle to hold the kid's set in. Don't think this seat even had the fold up carry handle it was that small.

Didn't do this often and did resort to the wife's Toyota most of the time till the kid got big enough to ride regular style in the back. This worked until he was too big to fit in the back. Heck, the wife at 5-3 is too big to fit in the back. The "kid" is now 14 and taller than me. Asks me every once in a while when I'm going to get a turbo or a 968. Yeah, he wants the 944.

Guess what I'm saying is don't sweat it. Enjoy every little moment you have with them as they grow. It goes by way too fast. Still there are now times where the wife and I are alone in the 944 and she leans back and smiles asking if we can "take the top off".

The stork just delivered a baby boy for us on Jan 31st 2003. But I can tell you my 944 is going no where regardless of lack of use. In fact due to other pressing issues I've had no chance to drive mine for almost a year now. There isn't anyone I know who sold theirs then was not very sorry later. Just enjoy owning one, drive it between family duties. Take it out for an hour or so during weekends. Pick a day(s) of the week drive it to work. Besides, once the kid gets to around 3 years or so the 944 back seat will be "perfect".

I guess leaving the car in the garage, un-used (cept for a few hours a month) is a possibility, until Jenna gets bigger. But if that takes a year, I can't see living with driving a Taurus for that long!?

The other plan could be sell the 944, buy a BMW 325 coupe, like Tom R is doing, and when the kid(s) are old enough, I could buy another 944/968?

Quite the dilemma!?

I drive my Taurus for 5 months a year! It could be worse.

Why can't your wife ride in the back? Where's her priorities!

Peckster--Ever try to fit into the back seat of our cars? Yikes! Any more than 5 minutes causes permanent spinal damage!

Not dissin the Taurus...it's actually FASTER than the 944 getting on the highway (pretty sad, huh)!

I have a car seat that fits perfectly. I'll check when I get home as to what brand and model it is.
The only problem is that my little girl is 2 1/2 and she's getting too big to fit in that seat. I'm going to have to shop around for a larger one that will fit because the only way the 944 will go is if it's replaced with a 968 or S2!

I think the forward facing seats should fit. But for now, I have the rear-facing infant seat...

Also, I thought for the forward seat, you needed 3-point seatbelts in the back?? With lap-belts, how would a regular child seat work?

I am solving the kid hauling (more like family hauling) problem by puchasing a used BMW 5 series.
It's a perfect match for the 944. The one I am looking at is Silver to boot. Kinda like twins!
Keep the 944. More than one way to skin a cat.
(Apologies to all cat owners, I have three, none skinned).

A '95 BMW 325is is a MUCH friendlier car to drive...way newer, but not as cool as a 944....

Will fit the family though. Decisions, decisions.
