Post Constant Search for N/A Power

Here's the latest set of upgrades:
Freshly rebuilt head by Huntley
Jon Milledge performance cam
Bursch header and test pipe with Thermo Tec wrap
Nology coil

The results:
Impressive improvement in seat of the pants feel. Car is much stronger and more responsive from 3200rpm to redline.
Bursch header is loud. Not obnoxious loud, but it is a little ricey sounding with the stock muffler. Maybe an SFR cat back system is next.
The Milledge cam gives a nice rumble at idle. This is a great add on. A bit pricey, but worth it.
The Thermotec wrap on the headers is highly recommended. The heat reduction under the hood is enormous. I would say there is a 60%-70% reduction in heat underhood.

I will get it on a dyno and post my results soon.

I've been looking for some header wrap, where did you get yours? Was it expensive?

Go to www.themotec.com and check out the distributor links. I ordered mine from a shop in Ohio. I believe it came out to about $55 with the wrap and clamps kit. They have a 50' kit for 4 cylinder engines.
It took me about three hours to completely wrap the headers.

Sounds good to me, and the link is http://www.thermotec.com not http://www.themotec.com

Did you get 1"x50' or 2"x50'? Also how much did you have left over?

Wouldn't you rather save up for a 951 or 968 with the brakes and suspension to handle the power? You'll come out ahead in the long run.

Nope. I'd rather have the sleeper. Besides, after 5 years, she's grown on me.
Also, with the insurance rates so high here in Jersey, having an NA is financially beneficial.

You should dyno it. Seriously, the NA's are known for their lack of "modability", I think the porsche community would like to know how much you are putting down, I know I would.

The answer to life isn't to buy a 951 or 968 =P An n/a can be made to go fast too with the right mods

Sure, I could pay $4k for a supercharger and my n/a would then go fast, but when the curves came or I had to stop, I might have a $7 road cookie, not a decent 951. Money is better spent on suspension and brakes first so we can cut our teeth and learn to drive, then go for the power later, whether by modding the n/a or going to the 951, 952, 968. ram_one: any upgrades besides the engine? how much difference is there in insurance?

BTW generally only 944 owners are aware that the n/a's are relatively gutless and hence make great sleepers. Everybody who comments on my car thinks it's the fastest thing on the road . You wanna sleeper: get a 924S and start the holy grail quest with that.

I've run the numbers. It's just not worth it compared to just chipping a 951. Dyno your n/a and tell us how much you've spent on it and we'll see if I'm wrong.

I'd like to get my car on a dyno as well...

Do I smell another metro NY/New Jersey/wherever dyno day in the making???

Last time it was $100 for 2-3 runs or more if need be including a/f gauge charts. That was at deman motorsport in Nyack, NY.

How much did this run? Did it include new valves and springs?

To BRB944: Buying a 951 and chipping it would probably be cheaper in the long run. But half the fun is taking my car which I am intimately familiar with (5 years) and building it up until I am satisfied with the results. Also, I do plan on updating the brakes and suspension at the appropriate time. With the current mods, it is not a necessity. Besides the engine work, I have installed 951 swaybars (got them for free), new Bilsteins all around, and new rotors.

Michael: I am not sure about the valves, but I am almost certain the valve springs were replaced. Total cost was $550. The cam was about $675. The Bursch setup was about $325.

I agree with ram_one. My car now has everything a stock 951 has or better. Just needs the power, which will come soon.

Brakes were last weekend (from my other post today):

I realize that it may seem foolish to some to have done all this work to an NA, but I like my car and want to keep it instead of buying someone else's used (potential) headache.
