Default Car Dolly or car carrier? Which to use??

OK, so when I bought my 928 i rented a truck and a carrier to go pick it up. It wasn't that far (about 50 miles) but the rental ended up costing me over $200. Now I've purchased two 944s and I'm thinking about just buying a tow dolly that I can hook to my wive's SUV but I'm reading that they are not recommended for RWD cars. I can buy a dolly for way cheaper than renting a hauler again - anyone have any experience or issues using one for a 944?

being rwd shouldnt affect anything if the car is a manual and in neutral. there is a common issue with towing automatics that can damage the transmission internals. the engine needs to be on to drive the trans oil pump otherwise the fluid doesnt really flow

When I went to U-Haul to rent a dolly for the 944S I was told they would not even rent me one for the vehicle due to it's low clearance. Even when a tow truck is called I have to specify a flat bed as they will damage the front valance trying to lift it on a fork type tow lift. Ideally you should disconnect both axles to tow a 944 any distance with a dolly.

Both are standards, one has no motor and I don't really care about the trans. I just want to have something to use in the future.

I towed a 951 400 miles on a u-haul dolly (told them it was for a mustang) with no problems at all. Tranny and driveline is still fine five years later.

Thanks guys, looks like the tow dolly is the way to go unless I tow the 928 with A/T far.

I live in middle Ga. and towed a 944 from Ashville, NC with a two wheel tow dolly. I had to take with me 2ea 2"x8"x6' as extra ramps to push the 944 up onto the dolly. Towed like a champ with no problems. Make sure to get the over the wheel tiedown straps.

Cheers,
Larry

Geez, as I'm looking and calling on CL, I'm finding 16' trailers for as cheap as dollys. The dolly would fit in the driveway and that is my only reason for leaning that way now.

Well with a 16' trailer you still may have a problem. It all depends if the ramps are long enough so the Porsche will clear. You will need a wench to pull the car up onto the trailer. You will still have to buy 4 ea. over the wheel tiedownds to secure the car. The dolly I used belonged to a friend. The plate the wheels rested on would swivel. Make sure you buy one with the swivel feature and over the wheel tiedowns.

Cheers,
Larry
