Default Trip meter and odometer???

On my 89 944 T the trip meter and the odometer just stopped turning? I reset the trip meter to zero but both still won't turn. Any suggestions on how to repair....?(the trip meter now says 0000 and the milage is 71636)

Just stopped working less than 100 miles ago...since my last fill up since I always reset the trip meter.

Thanks

That happened to me last winter. I think it generally happens when you press the reset button as the car is driving. it just snaps some teeth off of that odometer gear, and makes it not turn anymore...

WOW do you have to remove the steering wheel? How do you remove the front( pad to get to the 15/16" nut) of the steering wheel to get to the big nut? Is a puller necessary after removing the 15/16" nut?

It takes some patience and finesse, but you can remove the instrument cluster without removing the steering wheel.

front pad pulls off, and you souldnt need a puller other than your arms.

One other thing to pay attention to. The back of the instrument cluster has a plastic printed circuit on it. DO NOY tear this!! It would be much easier to do with the steering wheel off,but my car didn't have an airbag,so I don't know how to pull the wheel. Good luck.

I have gotten to the point that I can have the cluster out of my Airbag equipped 951 in about 10 minutes WITHOUT pulling the steering wheel...

It can be done, just take your time, and be careful....

Give yourself some uninterrupted time. You can do this.

The odometer doesn't fail because of pushing the trip meter - that is merely the final nail in the coffin. The gear softens because of the oil the factory used to lubricate that gear - the oil makes the gear turn into a soft gooey texture. Be sure to count the number of teeth on the old gear so that you can ensure that you order the right new one. You can pick these up from an odometer/instrument repair shop - that's what I did - AU$10. While you are there change the instrument bulb to 3W ones. Also - be very carefully pulling the needle off the speedo - that is the most difficult part of the whole process.

It also helps of you use a magnetic tipped screwdriver - some of the screws are quite tricky to extract without dropping.

Good luck

Default gear failure

My odometer quit working about the time this post came out. When I got into the gear several teeth were missing but I tried to count the teeth anyway. However when I touched the gear the teeth just fell off. Then when I tried to pull the gear off the shaft it fell apart.

I thought you folks might like to see what a failed gear looked like.

Amazing that it worked as long as it did.

Just did this myself a couple of weeks ago myself on my 1990 S2. I followed the write up with pics from KLA Industries (look for odometer gear replacement under the 'Technical' menu option:

Found another place right here on Rennlist with lots of pictures. Do not forget to remove the two screws, one above the trip meter button in the vent and one below it. Before removing the gage cluster, mark each back side connector (3 ea).

Cheers,
