What year? Shifts fine I assume? Did these ever have LSD? Does yours?
Info people may need. Esp since you are asking $800.

Recently rebuilt?

NNNNNope. Just thought your sale would go better if you added a little more info.
Oh also what year is kind of important. I suppose I could look it up by the drive ratio, but it is important for people looking to buy 944S 88+ are worth more than the 87 in most cases due to the short 5th gear.

I'm 99% sure that gear ratio reflects a short 5th. Long fifth is 3.875 I believe.
Which is a plus.

Wait... so the transmissions out of a 1988 S is worth more right?

Yeah the 1987+ 924S and the 1988+ 944S had the short 5th gear.
So your 1987 924S has the short 5th.

All 87-88 944S used a turbo gearbox (i.e. all Turbo Gears and large bearings, so they all had the 0.829 5th) with the a 3.889 R/P, which is not the same as the N/A 3.889 R/P.

The 924S and 88+ 944 N/A's had the 0.829 5th instead of the earlier 0.730 5th. The rest of the gearing (1-4) is slightly different than the Turbo/S/S2 gearbox.

The 89-91 S2's used the turbo gearbox with a 3.875 R/P and a 0.778 5th.

Nothing specifc, just offhand knowledge of these cars - what do you disagree with?

You should be questioning the info in the other posts on this thread, as there is some confusion there.

But thats great to know when I get the time to pull the transmission out of my 1988 944S. I'll be able to price it right. ha.

All of this is 100% correct from the shop manual and other online resources.
Clarks is a little wrong on some of their transmission information. IDK why.

I have been told several times to watch out for 87 944S when looking for a short Fifth gear because not ALL of them used the 083D (short 5th turbo style). I was told it was only 100% on the 88+ 944S.

The 924S (1987+, but the 1986 was ROW only) use the 016J which has a n/a style gearing. This also applies to the 1988 n/a like stated above.

Red is for the 924S and 88 N/a. Blue is for the turbo style transmission which is found in the 944S. The PET and Oddjob both say all 87 944S, but I was always told different which is why I posted what I did.

Hopefully this helps everyone.

I parted out an 87 S which was #194 according to the VIN. Build date was 8/86. It had the short 5th, as the car was running and driving within my family before it was hit.

I doubt Porsche would install random R&Ps, so I'm thinking the vast majority of 944Ss have a short 5th. If car #10 had a long 5th, that would be another story.

Not to say your wrong but keep in mind if the transmission was replaced under waranty it could very well have gotten the updated transmission.
