Sorry guys - no idea what you are talking about.

The production 87-88 944S never came with the 944 N/A 0.730 5th (nor the S2 .778 5th) from the factory - only the 0.829 Turbo 5th. Do you have documentation or experience that shows otherwise?

I owned an 87 S for 13 years, and have been around these cars and transmissions for longer than that. All factory information supports the 0.829 5th and I have never heard, seen, or read anything anywhere that contradicts it, until this thread.

My guess is that whoever was passing on this hearsay, was confusing the 87-88 924S w/ the 944S. Since the 24S used the N/A gearbox, there would be more possibility of early N/A trans' being swapped in/out to get the 829 5th instead of the 730's – which could cause some uncertainty of what actual transmissions (5th gears) are in certain used cars.

off topic but what does the shorter 5th do better exactly? (i'm not a racer)
