Angry Loud metal-to-metal Rattle

Hey Guys,

Hoping for some help on my latest problem ...

There is a very loud rattle that corresponds to the speed of the car coming from the transaxle area. As you speed up - the frquency of the rattle increases - as you slow down, the volume increases.

I would be very happy if I was doing some research on wave harmonics and my car decided to gift me with this data, but this is not the case. I just spent $600 CDN on other stuff less than 8 hrs ago and am not very excited about financing my mechanics weekend plans (once again).

Perhaps one of you (this meanse you!) could tell me what this noise is. I'm sure its not the normal 5th gear noise and niether is it the short transmission shudder at downshifting. It is a consistent, periodic rattle that is present only when the car is in gear and moving. If I press the clutch while its moving and in gear, the rattle goes away. Gets worse under acceleration - goes away when decelerating.

Is it the torque tube? What does it all mean ? Is something else on my car dying <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" /> ?

Thanks

All insightful help will be repaid with a wholesome Canadian beverage (yummy) at seedy bar in Toronto ... (offer not valid for residents of the the greater toronto area - (fine print may be disregarded under special circumstances))

If it were the tube it would be with the engine speed.

Could be the C/V's. If so try cleaning and repacking them if you can do it yourself.

I have the same noise. It's been their since I bought the car over a year ago. Although mine seems to go away the faster I go. It's really loud in 2nd. I have been told it may be the throw out bearing or just the 5th gear can of marbles thing. It has not gotten any worse so I'm not to worried about it. Although it is kind of embarrassing driving a car that gets this much attention but it sounds like the transmission is about to fall out.

have the same thing. My best guess is CVs like autry said. When you turn with the gas down it gets worse right? UUTQ i would get it checked out, if one of those falls off you'll be stranded...

man i hate winter in boston, too cold to work on the car, everything seems to be falling apart/off. In for some fun spring cleaning.

PS: dont peel out when you have that noise, it kills your cvs a lot worse than your clutch...unlike a 911

Speedy; educated guess would be a cv joint.Try this for a cheap quick fix that works for awhile. Swap the axles from 1 side to the other side. You are now wearing out the opposite side of the joint which is almost always in better shape .If the noise disappears ,you found your problem.Replace them asap though as they are on their way out . Otherwise you will become a FORD.

"If I press the clutch in while its moving and in gear, the rattle goes away."

Will cv's stop making noise when the clutch is in, even when the car is still moving?

I realy think its the TT, clutch releas bearing, TT/tranny linkage srew loose or inside the tranny. Need some help how to break down the list fast without taking apart the whole car :P
Sometimes my rattle go crazy when i floor it and sometimes its just the rattle.
It goes away when i press the clutch all the way in, and is not realy loud when I drive in 90kmh, but over 100kmh its loud

I bet it is the torque tube death rattle. CV joints make a wampp wampp or clicking sound in turns.

Cheers,
Larry

So I have to get new bearings/holders/sleavs for the torque tube then ?
I got a spare TT I can test with also, but its a real mess getting the TT out, I have to take down so mutch. Or is it an easy way also ?

I had the same problem. I did the whole TT thing to no avail. I just ended up buying a used transmission from a fellow Rennlister. I'll have it in soon, I'm keen to disassemble the old one so see what it looks like.

Is it a "dry, raspy" sound?

Try this:

With the car parked, in neutral, clutch out, rev the engine to around 2500-3000 rpm, when you let off the gas and let the revs drop does it make the noise? If so, it's probably one of the main carrier bearings in the transmission. The good news is that there are plenty of good used transmissions out there and you'll most probably find a good one here on Rennlist.
