The tray can be prevented from breaking by reinforcing it with an arizona ice tea can cut and folded... adds some strength to it.

I used clear packing tape (Kuhl951's idea from page 1) and it worked amazingly well. I took the hinge apart and out of the car, then I put two strips of tape (one from above one from below, so they stuck together) to reconnect the armrest to the tray, and I had a hinge again. I don't think this tape-hinge will ever break unless a dumb passenger leans on it and tears it. But then I can use another 3 cents worth of tape to fix it.

I've been driving 944's since 1983...I'm on my 3rd.

The hinge broke about 5 times over the years and all those cars. After reading the threads on this, I tried metallic duct tape - which DID NOT WORK! It cracked along the hinge area.

BUT, I had some GORILLA CLOTH duct style tape...and after disassembly of the box...IT WORKED very well. Surprising. So far it’s been working in the dead of winter.

I even accidently knocked it with my elbow, and it held tight.

1983 944 Manual...544,000 miles - original engine and transmission. 2 clutches!

1987 944 Automatic....300,000 miles...auto transmission is a pain and finally did the whole car in. Engine is great and strong. Still my backup car though.

1987 944 Manual...50,000 miles...super mint condition...my daily winter driver car.

I couldnt have done this Porsche magic without George B and of course Ferdinand!

I want to buried in a 944 so I can zoom around the universe in a super reliable car.

Wow, this is an old thread. It's three more years and I've still never opened mine. So that makes 7 years. What's in there that makes it worth opening?

I don't open mine very often. But, when the hinge broke, every time I'd lean on the armrest it would slide away towards the passenger side, which was really annoying.
