So I replaced the center console hinge again tonight. What a poor design to just use a thin peace of plastic for the hinge. (considering the rest of the car is designed pritty well, I guess if this is what I am complaining about that is not too bad)

Has anyone put a metal hinge on the center console? If so what size hinge did you use? Any advise on doing so?

I am thinking about using the old broken one to make a new one with a metal hinge.

I have a couple replacement "trays" for the center console left. I got a bunch of them a while back and replaced all the hinge parts with them in my cars. I like them much better.

$25 new in the bag from Porsche if you want one.

I am looking for suggestions on metal hinge sizes to use if I try to make one using a metal hinge.

Just grab some piano hinge from the hardware store. The smallest size you can get in a piano hinge, which is not all that small, should work.

Lots of people have done this. It usually doesn't come out looking too good. I'd love to see it done well so I can copy it!

I used that really strong fibrous packing tape to make a narrow hinge 5 years ago. It still holds as well today as the day I installed it. I do wish I had used a black felt pin on it for that custom touch. Nothing says "I care" better than packing tape and a Sharpie

Steve, you sold your black car with the red interior?!?! That was one of the first 951s I ever saw, and one of the nicest! But I'm sure the sapphire car is sweet - I adore that color.

I like the armrest as opposed to the open tray because I rest my arm there constantly.

Yes it's gone and residing with a RLister in the San Diego area The 25-30% pay cut from Conan the Governor has me up against the ropes at the moment and I have to simplify things until the economy improves. Spencer has been helping the new owner out with a few repairs like motor mounts and some goofy switches.

The silver car will be done someday if I can ever get some help putting the new engine back in..wink wink nod nod.

I used a 1' strip of nylon strapping (like for backpack straps, etc.) and riveted one edge to the bottom half, attached it to the top half with the little screws that hold the armrest together. Works tolerably well. I have a new tray/hinge assembly I plan to install when I get some better matching vinyl or leather to recover the armrest.

I broke a brand new hinge when a nickel slid under the latch and stuck it shut good. The hinge tore when I struggled to get the lid open. Not a good location for change!

Travis, does that 'tray' work in early cars?

I currently have a new hinge here waiting for me to re-glue the leather on the armrest to install it, but I've already broken two of them (not me, passengers somehow unable to get in and out of the car without assistance from my flimsy armrest cassette holder useless box) and I'd much rather have that tray so I can actually rest my cell phone or wallet somewhere.

the smallest piano hinge that my Lowe's had was too big. I'm gonna go try some other hardware stores this weekend and try to find a small piano hinge. I'll post pics if I find something that works.

Check craft stores like Michael's...a lot of them carry tiny hinges used in things like jewelry boxes, and doors for model/doll house miniatures...

My hinge was broke when I bought the car! I'm going to Hobby Lobby on lunch and I'm gonna source some small hinges for us. Maybe some of those little chrome or gold ones and I'll use fabric paint (flat finish and it'll hold) to cover the hinge after a test fit. If they're the small ones I'm thinking of, I might use two or three. Hopefully they're not pricey. I don't have much money!
