Default Rear tow hook mounting holes

THE ANSWER

Some people go to install their tow hooks (Like those available from Rennbay) and all they do is thread 3 bolts through 3 pre-existing holes on each side and they are done.

Some of us, however, look back there and there are no holes.

Well I fell into the latter group. But here's what I found...I had the holes, but they were plugged with rubber plugs and then had cosmoline put over on top of the plugs! So I cleaned up my cosmoline with Optimum Power Clean (this softens it a bit too), and then cut off the cosmoline that was on top of the plugs (you could sort of see where they were) with a pocket knife. After that I just popped the plugs out and my holes were good to go!

I was under the car cleaning stuff and I had always wondered...I bought the hooks but hadn't installed them because of this dilemma. You could just barely see the outline of the plugs in the cosmoline and that is what piqued my interest.

I only found the plugs after I started hacking away at the cosmoline. I expected holes filled up with cosmoline but the plugs themselves were a bit of a surprise. What was sad about touching them was that they were SO clean! Hermetically sealed in cosmoline for twenty years.

Early 944s didn't have those holes from the factory...we'd have to run the rear tie downs that bolted to the bottom of the shock tower. Or we could somehow find a way to drill a hole - but that would take some skill with a drill.

Then I guess your baby does not see any track time.....I have the front tow eye in-place...but should probably install a rear one.

Well they come (at least my 89 came) with tie downs on the front rails from the factory.

These cars were meant to be put on trailers. They certainly don't get anywhere under their own power.

You ever wonder why the hand brake is on the left side? It's so you can access it easier while you're pushing the car on and off the lift.
