hey guys,

my car tends to get noticed more as well. i have had quite a few guys around my age (26) ask about the year of the car. the looks on their faces...

growing up in a motorhead family, there was always discussions of cars so it paid to be up on your studies. as a kid i would always spot the "cool" cars and became a porsche lover very early on - even at the disappointment of my father and uncle (both big block, muscle car, how fast can you go in a straight line type of guys). so it seems that the most appreciative nods and gestures i get are from kids and other porsche fanatics. i mean, let's face it - you either would die for your porsche or absolutely never own one...there never seems to be a casual p-car enthusiast, we are all psychos in some sorts.

and to Eric, you got some brass ones to park in the strip!! i went to college in Pittsburgh, that can be a rough area!!

When boost builds, the turbo spool is quite loud. When I let off, the Blow off Valve is even louder. Everyone stares, I get thumbs up from innocent bystanders, and once in a while, a standing ovation =).

The 944 series Porsche is truly a fantastic car and has a large cult following in our area.

However in California and specifically the Silicon Valley where I live, you are put in your place daily.

In 1987 on the second day of ownership, my wife and I decided to go for Saturday brunch in down town Los Gatos (The YUPPY'st town in the valley). We turned onto main street with our shinny new 944, as proud as can be, and pulled in right behind a neon yellow Lamborgini Countach......INSTANT REALITY CHECK!

I have driven by a cherry '46 Mercury "Woody" station wagen, 356's of every color and model, abundant 55 thru 57 chevy's, a Ford GT40 (my favorite encounter), countless Ferrari, Model T's, 550 spyder, Hemi Super Birds, GT2's/3's and very early one morning on Hwy 280, I had an INDY CAR flash by me, in full song! Heard him coming long before I saw him, what a rush that was. Talk about felling like you are standing still!

California...where it never rains and there is no salt on the road.

So to get back to the question....My 951 tends to receive most of its deserved attention from ME.

Yeah Bill, you do live in a part of the country where 911's are basically the same as Honda Accords everywhere else. I've seen some fine machinery out there as well.

Holy ****! You saw an honest to God GT40??? That would be incredible to see on the road. The Indy car sounds amazing too.

Now where did I put that lottery ticket?

Ok Bill, I want details! When did this happen, and what vintage do you think the indycar was.

You aren't getting a scene from the movie 'Driven' mixed up with real life are you?

fast cars, gotta love em. growing up in cleveland ohio, near many a ford factories, the trend in cars was of the "muscle" variety. there was a guy with one hell of a nice lotus esprit i would see on occasion.

out here on the east coast there is much more eye candy for the euro types. plus, i am right in the middle of the DuPont empire, so i see plenty of 996, 993, ferrari, lotus, etc. in fact, i see the same 996 twin turbo at least 3 times a week. must be nice to have a daily driver like that...i wonder what his "toy" is...

This is interesting- it must really depend on where you live- I haven't gotten TOO much attention in my Turbo S since I've had it, although it is zermatt silver- not as catchy as red or something, but I DO get the occasional "nice car" or thunbs up. Interestingly enough, I've been for a ride in a couple of Boxster's, and have received about as much attention in them, in the couple of rides TOTAL, as I have in the almost 3yrs of driving my 951! I have to admit, that the amount of attention we got in the Boxster was TOO much! Girls looking and giggling, etc (that was fine) and guy's giving the "Fu** you" look- sad really...

My Speed Yellow Boxster S gets an obscene amount of attention. I've had the car for 2.5 years, and I have to admit - it took a while (like 6 months)for me to get used to it. When I first got the car, there were not many Porsches in my town - much less YELLOW ones. The car is debadged, so just add speedster humps for complete "What the hell is that thing?" confusion. But after a while, you get used to it. Now I don't even notice people noticing!

My 944 is Kalahari Beige (champagne) and it just blends in more. The attention it receives is usually from other Porsche nuts, although I did have one teenage girl ask me, "What kind of car is that? It sure is sharp!" (She had never seen a 944!)

Every 944 (heck, every P-car) I see grabs my attention. As time goes by, we'll see fewer and fewer 944s on the road, so the good examples will be even more notable.

Thank GOD MY to be wife does not read these posts or I would be hosed. No one who ever comes over to my house is to ever admit to this sort of thing or she just might have it totaled for me…

Admittedly these cars are attention getters to the point of absurdity. Not really sure why though. Don’t get me wrong I love my car and admirer any Porsche that I come across “Well maybe not the boxters, just doesn’t do anything for me” In any case my little story is in two parts. Fist right after the paint was added to the car I was in Nashua NH at the BK with a friend of mine after a nice test drive. Two very nice 20+ year olds in exceptionally tight clothes stopped by to admire the car and I like to think its occupants. In any case I hope they didn’t notice the drool. Ouch!

The capper was on the way home from work, top off on the freeway in heavy stop and go traffic with my to be wife in the passenger seat. These two very attractive girls in what looked to be mom’s minivan almost caused an accident just to pull up along side. The passenger then promptly rolled down her windows stuck her upper torso completely out the window “Use your imagination and you will not be far off. Think Daisy duke” and asked, “What kind of car is that? It really sounds cool! I looked over and I am not sure what my better half did but the young lady promptly removed her upper half off the side of the van and rolled up the window. “I think she got flipped off or something close to that any way”.

I then was immediately questioned about the incident and asked if that sort of thing happened often. Trying to be a cool an collected as possible I first swallowed hard, thanking the high flow exhaust for masking the sound my dry swallow produced and said…

“No honey not at all”

I’m going to hell for that whopper of a lie.

Later.
P.S. If I where single I would be in a whole lot of rubble.

TaboII I have your problem in reverse. Only thing worse than getting noticed in your 951 is the fact that she uses it as ours as a daily driver. Good looking woman in a good looking car , always a magnet for attention. She compounds the problem with vanity plates . It is actually fun to watch. I have more than once been following her and she will begin to pass some young guy in their ****** ,fill in the blank, and they will start to jump on the gas or downshift. Amazing how quiickly their tone changes when they see the turbo script on the back . It is amazing that it is getting to the point a lot of guys do not even know what kind of car it is and most people think it is a newer model P-car. They sure can design a car.

P.S. You can always garner attention when your in a Porsche and flying down the freeway at 120-130 at full boost , I mean 60-70
