Cool Hello all, Ground Zero to LA in my new baby

Well after almost two years of searching for the right deal on a 951, I found her. It is an 87 guards red and black. I flew up to Boston, did the PPI and after that checked out I called the wife and told her to fly in to New York and I would meet her there. After a beautiful drive down the coast from Boston, I picked her up and we stayed in the city for a few days. It was my first time back to New York since I was a kid. We had an incredible time. We went down to Ground Zero. What a humbling experience. Everyone needs to go there to see it first hand. After this we started the journey home to Louisiana. I could not pass up the chance to drive this car down the Blue Ridge Pkwy. Wow!! What an incredible car to just drive in. I have owned lots of sports cars including a 3rd gen RX-7 twin turbo. They have nothing on this car. It is simply a joy to drive on the highway. 90 mph all the way home and 25 mpg!!! Great to see such a dedicated group of people gathered here to help each other sharing their knowledge and love for these cars on rennlist. Gotta love the internet..

Are you telling me that all of those references that I've seen throughout my life, for "NY to LA" have been referring to Louisiana?

Welcome to the board!

Then I guess you will have to come sometime between June 1 and Nov. 30, but we usually leave when they come.

Good luck with the new toy! I can't agree more about Ground Zero...being an Engineer I got a close-up tour about a month back....having spent many hours in those buildings I'd never realized just how large the footprint was....and to think......WOW...

I used to work for deloitte on the 101st, they vacated after the 93 blast, and cantor took their space.

i still look up and say my office used to be there, you know up there up over those clouds ...

hey Ringo
Last summer I descovered the "Blue Ridge Pkwy" while driving back from Ashville to Dallas. My question for you is. What was your exact route, and do you have any must sees to advise?

Also I was in BR just yesterday. I sure enjoyed 92.3 out of NO and 1150 & 1300 from BR.

Ringo,

We're practically neighbors. I used to live in Tara but now reside in Mandeville. Congrats on the pickup.

Let me know if you need a mechanic as there is a fellow Rennlister here that I use exclusively. He's much closer to you than I (just 20 mins. over the bridge). He owns 4 944's right now and there is nothing on the car that he can't fix or replace from engines to bodywork (ask me how I know).

Stick around Rennlist as there is a wealth of knowledge and is well worth the $18. I highly suggest joining.

Also, the PCA has several events at NO Problem Raceway and I hear that there are some serious 951's over there plus some national cars that are putting down some fast numbers. They also do some DE's if you're interested. It'd be nice to overwhelm the PCA with 944's.

Chris-----email me when you're planning on being in the area.

Folks, lemme take on the duty of being your Blue Ridge Parkway guide for the segment around Asheville. I've lived here for ~35 years, and now live about 1 mile from the US 70 exit. (warning, long)

First, be aware that the max. speed limit on the BRP is 45, lower in congested areas, and it's radar-enforced _federal_ bust. There are very few, if any, parts of the P'way that would be even remotely challenging in any 944-series car at anywhere near legal speeds. This is a tourist road, with mostly gentle curves. Traffic is also a problem on most parts of the road in the day time, and deer & bears are moving roadblocks at night.

But the views are spectacular on clear days. Those are more likely to occur in late fall thru early spring, and are rare in the summer (humidity haze & air pollution). In winter, parts of the P'way are closed due to snow & ice; no budget for removal.

Driving challenges are more likely to be found on the roads that access the P'way. Two-laners like 80, 215, 276, & 151 offer some serious opportunity to try out your car & skills. These are old narrow 2-lane roads, with "swoopy" pavement (few potholes, tho'), never subjected to straightening and upgrading. Speed limits are generally 55, and even that can be challenging in places.

Warnings: Watch for bicylists; there are often no guardrails, shoulders are narrow to non-existant, drops of 200-500 ft. are not uncommon, tho' the trees will likely stop you before you hit bottom; slower traffic can prevent much enjoyment, and passing is potential suicide, since most curves are blind and straights are very short and rare. Drive it at sane speeds before trying to blitz it, to find the sudden, poorly marked 20-mph curves. Yes, they exist, even for P-cars.

Hard driving is much safer going _uphill_... even P-car brakes can be faded with hard charging downhill (BT,DT) for several miles.

Good sights to see... Mt. Mitchell SP, N. of Asheville on the BRP. Highest peak in Eastern US, road almost to top, lookout tower on top, all free, pretty good restaurant, camping, & hiking.

Good hiking at Graveyard Fields. Good views & some hiking at Devil's Courthouse & Grandfather Mtn (commercial, entrance fee charged). Great views when hiking out of Black Balsam Trailhead into Shining Rock Wilderness (Tennant Mtn. is only an hour's mostly easy walk in, with great views).

Overpriced food but great views from the window tables at Pisgah Inn... also lodging, but reservations are a must during peak season; very stiff hike to top of Mt. Pisgah. Fanciest hotels are off the P'way in Asheville at Grove Park Inn & on Biltmore Estate. For a small Southern town, downtown Asheville has pretty good nightlife with several quality microbrews; the highly conservative need to be aware that several of the downtown clubs cater to the way-far out of the closet gay / transvestite population.

The major tourist event is a huge street festival the last week-end of July called Bele Chere; totally free except for what you eat & drink, live music continually on a half dozen stages scattered around downtown, where all streets are closed to autos for three days. Claimed attendance last year was around 325,000, IIRC.

"Help keep North carolina green; bring money!"

Jim, "Don't move here!"

David M., looks like jim968 covered the must sees of BRP much better than I could have. My wife and I love going to Asheville and the Biltmore. Been there a few times. Last time we went to the Biltmore we were in my 3rd gen 94 RX-7TT, and left to head north to one of ski resorts. I could not pass up on taking a scenic route on one of those winding roads and after driving about 25 mi the sign says pavement ends Doh! It was about 8 mi before this route connected back to Interstate so we were kind of committed at this point. The only problem was it was snowing like crazy at this point, and on a dirt road in a rear wheel drive sports car, not one of the brightest moments in driving history. Funny pictures of an RX on a dirt road in the woods covered in snow. I just wanted to check my wifes heart. Beautiful ride though!

ELLSSUU, know Tara well. Guess we have the same blood type, purple and gold. Gooo TIGERS!!!!! When were you there? I am in touch with Terry, seems like a nice guy. I hear he is painting your car. Would love to see it.

Thanks for the welcome guys!!
