Post sigh.. coolant leak

well i got the engine back together after a lengthy rebuild, and i was running it the other day to burn some oil off of the headers. things were going fine until i noticed smoke coming from the right side of the engine. i shut her off to inspect and what do i notice but smoke coming from the right side of the seal between the head and the block. the only things i can think of that it could be are a crap head gasket or head bolts not properly torqued. i'm going to check the bolts in a little while.. is there anything else it could be? anything that wouldn't require the engine being torn back down?

thanks
ian

You should always retorque head studs after 1 heat cycle. Take the cam tower back off and give them a shot with a torque wrench, or about 5 degrees with a degree wheel and a breaker bar.

Then, if it leaks, something ain't flat.

ian.... after you torqed down the head the first time. did you ever take it back off. once you tighten down a head gasket it cant be used again... did we reuse the same one twice. that would explain the leaking head... a little.

I agree with Brett, I did that and had to put a 2nd head gasket in.

However I still have problem with oil and coolant mixing. It's just too cold to pull the oil cooler assembly apart right now. I still have coolant coming out in various places but I think the oil pressure is pushing the coolant out of areas that weren't meant to take 5 bar.

Good luck!

as far as i can remember (not very far unfortunately), the head never came off after it was torqued down. it would appear removal of the cam tower is in order, as well as a proper torqueing of the head nuts. at least i don't have to remove the head (knock on wood)

thanks
ian
