Default What exactly is sandwitched in the rocker panels

Near the rear wheel well? I just finished poking out little rust hole in my driver's side rocker and it seems that there's a layer of rust that's stamped in between the outside and inside sheet metal of the rocker (in the wheel well).

Any idea what is that layer supposed to be? I've etched it a bunch of naval jelly, but it's definitely the middle layer that's rusting, even in the lips.

Don't know if this is exactly the area you're talking about but I had a pretty descent rust issue and found out that there are quite a few layers in there:

The side box rail runs down the side to the rear wheel. My dad stuck the camera up there and snapped a pic. It was pretty weird...

Hmm it seems this is a problem spot for rust as I've got some there that I'm in the process of removing as well...Does it just puddle there from draining somehow? or is there possibly another way it gets in?

Someone in it's past two owners used the forward point immediately rear of the front wheels to jack the car up. They must have done something incorrect because they bent it up and cracked the undercoating (personally I wouldn't use that point for jacking, period). After that all it took was time. When I got it, it had rusted all the way thru as you can see in the first picture. It was pretty bad...

Rains in Arlington just like anywhere else I would think.

And the rust on my car was in the front, not the rear. While the rear would probably not be as prone to rust damage like this, I would never suggest lifting the front of the car from this point.

Do whatever you feel like but remember that what happened to my car could happen to yours as well.

Here's what I had to deal with. I noticed a little crack in the sealant inside the wheel well and when i started poking around, good amount of the metal disintegrated. It looks like some moisture got in between the two panels (outside rocker, inside wheel well) and rotted it out.

After cutting and etching:

Sealed in and out with POR15

I'm gonna fiberglass it from the inside and outside tomorrow, the hole is only about ~2cm high and 5-6cm wide
