Angry best way to remove swirl marks?

having owned three black 944s, i've had enough experience trying to buff out swirl marks, but not much luck. i've used 3M swirl mark remover (doesn't do crap), meguiar's polish and wax (makes it worse), and mothers polish. the best i've found is "nu finish" - the "not a polish, not a wax" stuff found in the cheesy orange bottle. it actually removed the swirl marks pretty well today.

anybody else have any suggestions?

Zaino. How much time do you want to spend? Look up Zaino on the 'net and read up on it before you go that route. 911 guys swear by it.

I've used the Griot stuff extensively, and it works quite well. I've used it with both a machine (Machine Polish 3) and by hand (Fine Hand Polish, small bottle is US$13.00). i think it may come down to technique at some point (i've worked as a detailer and done my fair share).

I use Zymöl Cleaner Wax on the black car, and it's quite effective but you need to take your time buffing it out.

I've used all that stuff - Meguires, Zymol, Griot's, orbital, hand polish, clay. For me, the Meguire's Cleaner, machine Clay and Griot's Carnuba in that order made a pretty good finish on my Guards Red. As a near perfectionist though, I can still detect 'some' swirls at certain angles. I think reality is that to truly eliminate swirls, you got to find the right polish to grind down the surface paint with damaging it, and step-by-step polish, wax and buff it until you have a mirror finish. This will require a lot of patience, time skill and an ideal product suite to accomplish.

i don't agree.. first of all, if you are "grinding down" the surface paint you are doing a couple things wrong: you are using the wrong type of polish or you are applying too much pressure. two things NOT to do. all of our cars have a factory clear coat. if you are taking off paint, you have gone through the clear coat and directly on to the paint on the car. you will need to spend a lot more money and do a lot more than polishing to the car to maintain a good exterior at this point.

a. wash car
b. Speed Shine (griots) in conjunction with Paint Cleaning Clay (griots) to get rid of the junk that the soap didn't and clean the surface
c. Fine Hand Polish (griots) for cars with really bad swirls, or to do a quick job, use Machine Polish #3 (griots) with a Porter Cable Random Obiter (do not let dry)
d. Apply Best of Show wax (griots, $20 for 16 oz., $20; for 8 oz Carnuba, $20), let dry. Repaeat process as needed.

Again, just a reminder that this cleaning solution is not cheap. The only other stuff I use that's store bought, is Zymöl, but it's not as good as Griot, smells good though.

That stuff must have been made by people with black cars. We use it on all 3 Porsches, only needs a new coat every 6-8 months, and it makes a total mirror finish. Best stuff I've ever seen so far, and I've tried them all.

This stuff makes a surface so slick that if you try and lean up against the car, you'll slide right off! Dust, dirt and other things barely even stick to it. This time of year there's a LOT of pollen dust that settles on everything. I go drive the car and all the stuff just blows off by the time I get home.

Not to mention I went from having to wash the car twice a week to only once every week or once every other week depending on how much I drive it. And I'm REAL picky about having a dirty car so if I let it go that long then it must do a hell of a job!

Zaino is the best. I spent two days putting layer after layer of Z5 and Z2 on my 968 and decided on the spur of a moment to take my car over to the PCA concours at Parts Heaven just to see how it would do. The car was glowing, everything slides right off, and it got 2nd place for 1990+ Porsches.

Get the Z1, Z2, and Z5. You wash your car, apply the Z1, then Z5, Z2, Z5, Z2, etc as many times as you want. The more coats the better. I think I used 4 coats of each before the concours, lol! They have this ghetto order form you print out and send in but their polishes are astonishing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
