most likely because when you open the windows, it produces a negative pressure in the passenger compartment. thereby any positive pressure air would be sucked into the passenger compartment by whatever holes are there.

This may be a stupid question, but.... is there any way that the heat could be coming from the torque tube? occasionally it will make this weird occilating (sp?) sound from the bottom of the bellhousing area. only noticable at idle or at low engine speeds. the sounds speed up with engine speeds untill they are drowned out by the engine at about 1300 rpms. (The car is an auto by the way)
I'm yet to find an obvious exhaust leak, still looking.

fyi, the foam will go through the shifter hole one the shift lever is removed. i did it with a 20+ year old used and only tore it slightly. i would think a new, more pliable one, would go in well.
