Default It's getting hot in here, you better.. Roll up the windows??

Often when I am driving in my 87 944 N/A Automatic on long trips I find that the center console area right around the shifter boot and the ash tray starts to get hot. Really hot. Also It feels as if someone is cooking my right leg.... And basically gets uncomfortable. However the heat seems to go away if the windows are up. Possibly due to the pressurized cabin.

My first idea was that I probably have a clogged cat. since my O2 sensor recently backed its way out of the hole. maybe due to back pressure. Now I have taken the exhaust from the converter back off of the car and the cat looks just fine. I can see right through it. no clogs or anything. The only thing that looks suspicious is that the top sides seam seems a little more seperated than the one on the bottom side.. could exhaust be getting out here? When the cat heats up it expands, so is this seam opening up? I also notice the heat start to build in normal driving around town but its not as hot so not as much of a problem.

Help would be appreciated

Do you smell any exhaust in the cabin? Cats can get clogged and cause degraded engine performance. Also there is a foam piece that sits atop the torque tube and provides some insulation. Mine is completely gone and the shifter gets hot like you describe. Surprisingly they are easy to get a hold of new. Cost about $70.

Man, after driving for just a little while, if I'm wearing my sandals, it feels like my right foot is cooking. I don't have my driver's side floor mat in right now and I can tell!

BTW straight pipe exhaust here.

No fumes smell. I may have to look into the foam piece. I do plan on putting a straight pipe in. Maybe that will help with the heat if its just that I don't have a foam insulator in place.(Which I don't recall seeing.)

Edit: the foam piece is in there. kind of. I can only see it coming down on the passengers side. but half of it on the drivers side is missing. How would one go about replacing this thing? please tell me you don't have to drop the tube does it go in through the shifter hole?

Aside from the foam insulator, I've found a difference in running with and without the rubber boot as far as shifter heat goes.

Don't think it will go in thru the shifter hole. Check out the link I posted. It's a fairly sizable piece. I have yet to replace mine so I dont know what all is required and I don't know how pliable the foam is. If it's farily soft then you may be able to squeeze it up and around the torque tube but it would require removal of the shifter. I also don't know if the shift rod runs thru it or if there is a groove in the top of it.

my foam was rotted away and i just took a can of great stuff foam and sprayed it in there. after it hardened, took a xacto and cut out the areas needed for the shifter to move.

It appears to be a pretty tight fit. Krystar's idea may be the best.

Krystar, did you notice the kind of heat that I'm describing before you sprayed the foam in there? howabout after?

Just remember when going that route those can be a PITA to deal with if you ever have to do any work with the TT. Also you have to make sure it doesn't interfere with the shift lever/rod.

Right, what kind of foam does it make? is it tough and rubbery like a mousepad? or more cushy like the foam pad that is on there now? I've never really came across this stuff.

Great stuff is like a hard insulating foam IIRC. The stock stuff is plyable, but easy to tear on accident (ask me how I know). I'd only use the Great Stuff to fill in some holes where the original foam is missing.

What he's talking about is the foam commonly used to seal around window mounted ACs. The stuff gets pretty tough to deal with upon attempted removal (ask me how I know, all we have out here in Iraq are window mounted units and it SUCK!) It also can be fairly messy. I personally wouldn't use it in an automotive issue.

Ok, I understand.

Any Idea why it cools down when I roll up the windows? In my opinion if it were just the foam then it wouldn't cool back down...I happened to come accross this little oddity by chance but have repeated it several times and got the same results.

i had alot of heat coming in...but then that could also have been attributed to my exhaust leak hehe.

greatstuff is good at what it does...expand seal and insulate. it definitely does not remove easily. and it doesn't look nice. but it does what i need it to do.

it hardens into a foam that's....comparable to foam packing peanuts, but denser and stiffer. it's cuttable, sandable, in a sense workable but not going to finish nicely.
