Well I mistakenly ordered some rear shocks for an early 85 and then tried to install them on my late 85 944 (I guess the counter guy didn't hear me specify 85 AND ONE HALF 944). Anyway, they wouldn't fit, the lower mounting point (IIRC) was smaller diameter in early 85.
The good news was I got them exchanged but don't ask where I bought them bc this ain't exactly Koni land. ...bruce

The change happened when cast aluminum rear control arms were used - in the 85.5 model year. Early models use 12mm mountings while later models use 14mm. Using the later shock in the early car is okay with a reducing spacer (McMaster-Carr), but not the other way around.

Good Luck!
