Cool My big wheels (with pics)

I pulled the rear wheels off my new turbo today to clean them today, and got some pictures. The faces are made in Japan, and the backs are supposedly kinesis that were welded on, for a total width of 10.5-11" based on my measurements, I think they're 10.5" or so. The tires are Yoko AVS AV1-40i, in 275/40r17. They are stamped with a "15mm offset" mark on the inside, but since the backs were added, they offset is obviously going to be different. If 2" were added to the back, that would push the offset out by 24mm (half the width that was added), to 39, If I understand offset and math correctly They fit inside the wheel wells very nicely, and they aren't even close to rubbing on the outside, I think I have at least another inch before they would rub on the fender.

I think they look really nice, and have a very factory look to them. a lot like the 16" cup wheels on the 968s, but just a little larger. I haven't weighed them yet, but I suspect they're pretty heavy.

I've thought about selling them, since I figure people would be willing to pay for really large wheels for early offset cars, and I like fuchs a lot, but these are just so BIG. We'll see what happens. If someone offered my enough $, I'd probably sell them. Here's the pictures: (the first ones are before the cleaning)

That's close to what I have on mine. I love 'em. I think they really make the car look like a newer Porsche.

Trade for my '86 offset 16" Silver Fuchs???

I really need room for big reds.

I wanted Turbo Twists, but if I can save $$$ by trading... it would be smarter!

how much you want for the difference?

Interesting wheels, especially the weld on bottom picture. If you truly want to know what size those are, I think you have to remove the tire and measure them. Looking at your pics and comparing with my wheels, I'd say yours are more close to 10" wide than 11".

Rich: I'll give that some serious thought and let you know. It would be nice to do it locally so we wouldn't have to ship them, and we could swap them at the same time.

Joe: I haven't driven it enough to really say. They don't have all that much life left on them, so I'm going to be shopping around for replacements soon. They also don't match the fronts, so I'm going to buy a whole matching set when it's time to change. Did you have that same model? I haven't seen many people post about them. Judging by the tread, they should do better in wet conditions than some other tires, which is important here in WA, not so much there in OK, I would think.

Mike: yeah, they look closer to 10", I'm planning on getting the tires off of them and measuing them before too long. The weld on that one is a little ugly, but the other wheel's weld is a bit cleaner.

Holy crap I just noticed u are in Seattle!!! That WOULD make things easier as I am willing to drive down.

But what's this about not having matching fronts??? You mean the wheels or the tires? I don't care about tires because my rubbers are pretty dismal for tread as well. But I was waiting to get 17" wheels before getting new tires!!! So maybe here's my chance.

Also, I know of a couple of local places that specialise in refinishing wheels - so that could be an option as well!

The front tires don't match, the wheels are all the same, except that they're smaller (8.5", with 245/45r17) They're in the same kind of shape, really nice with only a few little scuffs.

the rim width is supposed to be measured between the part of the wheel were the beads sit, so a wheel that is about 11" on the outside is about a 9 or 9.5 inch rim. They look mean on your car though and I would keep them as I love factory look but yet something different than factory, there is a place here locally that widens wheels and I thought about doing it but it would cost something like $125 per wheel and add significant weight.

rich: I know I've seen pics of your car before, where are they? Just wanted to check out the wheels. I've seen pictures of grey fuchs on a black 944, they look pretty nice I think. Don't know if I like black better or not.

Would I need a spacer and bigger bolts anyways to fit a big red caliper? marksports told me they are wider than the regular 86-951 brakes and that they rub against stock 86 offset rims. Is this true?

Anyways, I do want big reds not only for the looks but for the braking performance. It fits my driving style. I brake hard often. But that is also a function of the fact that I drive too fast too often. ANYWAYS

Danger, I'm sorting and uploading my pics for you. I'll paste the Fuchs on a black 86 for ya too.

The S4 brakes have the same size pistons as the Big Reds, they just can't accomodate as large of a rotor (diameter) as the Big Reds. The Big Reds caliper is slightly larger, so it will rub on a 16" wheel where as the S4 caliper won't if set up properly. Both brake set ups are more than anyone needs on the street, on the track the Big Reds will be better *slightly* as they will dissapate heat better with the larger rotors.

Fitting either Big Reds or S4 calipers require a good bit of work: You'll need custom rotors (for early offset), adapter brackets (Kokeln or Powerhaus), Longer caliper bolts, and 17" wheels for the Big Reds or 16" 951 wheels and 1/4" spacers for the S4's.

Okay assuming I have 17" wheels on my 86 with no spacers.

I SHOULD be able to slap these puppies right on, correct???

EDIT: Crap, i just noticed the 87+ clause! Damn.

I hear your advice on marginal improvement in braking, however I'm pretty set on the Big Reds for 4 reasons

1: They look so ****ing cool.
2: They do perform better (if only marginally)
3: Even less fade with the bigger rotors.
4: I can say I have "big reds" on my 951!!!
