Default Am I Being Taken for a Ride?

My windshield wiper on the driver side recently came disconnected where the wiper arm meets the wiper motor arm. My mechanic refers to this as the motors "transmission"

Anyway, they have had my car for a week now claiming that they cannot find the part (transmission). When I came on here a couple of weeks ago, I was told this was not a difficult problem to fix, so after a week without my car, I am getting frustrated to say the least. Do you guys think they literally cannot find the part or is something else going on? If this ends up costing more than a couple hundred dollars I am deffinitely taking it to another mechanic for a second opinion.

I cannot really tell whats going on in that pic, but I think it is where 2 meets 4. There is a little ball socket that connects the two and it came undone

I would go and get the car as well. If it is the windshield wiper motor and transmission they will probably want $1000 for parts and labor as it is time consuming to get to. You can do the job yourself with a $25 used one from ebay and a Saturday's worth of work.

Post some pics of the problem here and we can help you diagnose it...

The wiper motor is still fine so I hope to god they dont replace it. At first he said he could do a quick fix and re join the existing parts and then without ever explaining anything, he is now waiting for the part. He claims it is taking so long because he cannot find a used one, but I am starting to doubt whether these savings will even trickle down to me.

The motor and the transmission are all sort of together. It is probably possible to remove the motor but would probably be easiest to just swap out the whole unit if it has to be removed from the car anyways... Unless the mechanic things he can press the ball back in without removing the linkage....

Here is one on ebay...

I am assuming your car is a late 944?

Check your miles. Someone could be taking it out as well. Some might not suspect this, but the shop my exgirlfriend used to take her 928 S4 to, would take it out, sometimes 50 miles at a time! She didn't notice till she found yellow paint on the side where someone scraped the fender on a pole. Just lookin out for you man.

You can change this part yourself. I did it and it takes a day but it just makes you closer with your car.

Also +1 on the Rain-X it will make your wiper motor last longer because you barely have to use it.
