924T turbo.....turbo rebuildable?
I found a 924T FS, guy says the Turbo was going bad (not sure what that means exactly) but not knowing much about them, are they rebuildable or is there a better alternative to the original? Thinking about creating a 924 CGT or something close to get my 993 off the track

they are rebuildable.
theres a difference between the series 1 and the series 2 turbos. the latter is smaller. Theres about 3 different exhaust manifolds but they all have a 3 bolt flange so an aftermarket isnt an alternative without fabbing a new manifold (almost not worth it due to lack of space). you can do a hybrid using the k26 hotside, k27 cold, etc.
go to www.924board.org and have a good look through the threads there
they have found such things as being able to use the 951 bearing housing (straight swap) to get a watercooled turbo

Avoid the S1 turbos, the S2 cars are better in a number of ways. And if you are planning on doing a CGT replica expect to spend about 10K before its all said and done and then there's the problem of locating and purchasing a CGT intercooler which are NLA and quite expensive if you're even able to get the owner to part with it. After you're all finished and broke you can then PM me about how my 931GT is a bargain at $6500.
And of course the Turbos are rebuildable, but it'll cost ya!

I just sold my 932 cgt replica. I'll miss it, but I have my 944 to focus on now.

A guy on 924board makes TMI/C's using series 4/5 rx7 cores. Im selling one of his right now. he builds them to a jig made on a factory one.

I saw the guy on the 924 board who makes the coolers, it would be nice if it was more of a factory look and positioning, but I guess you go with whats available.

I'm confused. What makes yours a GT clone? Aren't those just 944 front end parts with exception of the nose panel and the air intake? And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't your car the one that was FS not to long ago for much less?

for the most part, to make a basic GT clone that is what most people do- 944 front bumper and spoiler, bonnet scoop, rear flares and an i/c if you can make one work.
To make a true replica would be silly money for a 931, i.e proper interior, polyurethane front & rear guards and front one piece bumper/spoiler, suspension, engine management, turbo and cooling, and then only red, black or silver with correct decals and badging.
The best cgt 'replica' i've seen is one in Aussie where the original rhd car was written off and everything transferred to a 932 shell.

There are very few differences between the CGT and a 931, with most obvious being the actual OEM intercooler. My car happens to have the intercooler, they are expensive and rare. It also has staggered factory fuchs. 944 fenders are identical in shape to the original CGT fenders. So besides changing out the 944 front valance for a fiberglass CGT valance and adding a euro rear bumper, you wouldn't have to do anything else to get the car to be a quality "CGT Clone".
Also, I was selling the car minus the CGT intercooler and with worn tires earlier this year for $3500 and I had it sold with cash in hand but ran into a fuel system issue before delivery... so I returned the buyers money and have since refurbed the entire fuel system. (New in-tank fuel pump, external pump, fuel filter, rebuilt WUR and rebuilt fuel dizzy.) In addition I also replaced the worn tires with new Goodyear Eagles. But don't worry I don't want you to buy my car... I was just pointing out that this will not be as easy as finding some beater 931 and throwing a few hundred bucks at it.
All I'm saying is this. Its taken a lot to get my car to this point, if a car like it had been for sale 2 years ago it would have saved me a lot of time and money. So from experience, don't expect the road to be easy or cheap, just finding a decent 931 S2 is in and of itself a challenge.
Good luck though.
BTW the guy that made those intercoolers is long gone.

I guess it depends on how close to the cgt you want to get. The cgts got a different snailshell transaxle with hardened internals which would count amongst many things rare as hens teeth. The 931 is already a good basis for a racecar which is why many replicas are purely cosmetic (except for those that want the wider track).
The US 931's (iirc 146 - 150hp) were very different from the RoW 931's (170 -177hp) to start with before you get to the CGT (210 hp).
Not really an indication of price but this is my stepdads RoW series 2 racecar clone with a 951 i/c. I sold my RoW clone with his (mines the blue one. needed a new cylinder head).

Why not just add up the costs?
931 S2 $2500 for a decent running example
plus deferred maintainance items $1000
Fiberglass body kit $1250
944 rear spoiler $100
Fuchs $1000
Tires $500
Intercooler $1500-$2500 (if you can find one for sale???)
Boost controller $50
Misc supplies (nuts, bolts, brackets, hoses
fiberglass epoxy, cloth.) $300
Plus track suspension mods $1000
Lowering and alignment $500
Track rat paint job $1000
Sub Total $10700
Plus lots of time. $$$$$?
(This total assumes only $1500 for the intercooler, which is on the low side for OEM but probably about right if you have something fabbed, it'll require special tubing and engine bay mods in addition to the intercooler itself.)

this is my intercooler. The guy from the 924board is still around. hes a kiwi so i talk to him every now and then. Physically it wont be as effective as the original cgt unit and again, no where near as good as a front mounted intercooler.
to look at an excellent example of a 932 based cgt racecar look up user BassGT on 924board. Also look up builds by 924racer and Ideola. both are rennlist users too.

The US cars had slightly lower compression and ran lower boost. There are some minor differences with respect to their ignition curves but nothing drastic and a US car can be safely boosted to 10psi without an intercooler, and with the lower compression (8 to 1 vs 8.5 to 1) 11psi would probably be fine assuming 93 octane and you'll see 180hp at that boost level. Slap an intercooler on there and the fuel system could handle somewhere close to 15psi. BTW unwiredtools.com makes a digital WUR that would allow you to precisely tune the A/F ratios at different RPMs and boost levels... this should allow you to run a reliable 15psi and see somewhere around 250hp.
As far as the snailshell tranny is concerned few people would want to deal with it compared to the Audi box. Plus with used 944s a dime a dozen, getting a replacement for the Audi box is cheap and easily available. So buying an S2 is just the better choice. IMO
You'll really need to spend a lot more time at 924.org if you're serious about this.
BTW I didn't realize that guy was still making those??? There have been many people asking about getting one but the thread has apparently been dead for a longtime.
