Front speakers ......still looking!!!
Has anyone tried to fit a 4x6 plate speaker in the front doors?Im looking at a few pairs Boston acoustic seem the shallowest mounting depth 1 5/8.Also could the be turned with woofer up?That might give 1/4 more clearance(a lot of these have tweeters that can be rotated in any direction.)
BTW mb Quarts did not fit in the doors!

I constantly ran into a problem with the speaker depth when I replaced my front speakers. What I ended up doing was to take some 1/4" balsa wood and traced the outline of the speaker grills. Then, I hollowed out the inside and placed the balsa wood between the door panel and speaker grill to act as a spacer. The balsa wood was meant to be temporary and I was going to replace it with something better, but almost three years later, it's still there.
You can sort of see how it all came together in this pic.

I got Infinity Kappas to fit in the front - had to widen the speaker opening about 1/4" around the bottom with a dremel (This doesn't show once the grilles are installed). The stock grilles stick out a little, but look OK. The kappas sound wonderful. Be sure to go through the whole area with a vacuum and a good strong magnet to get rid of metal shavings when you're done.
I understand Radio Shack sells a set of 4x6 grilles that will fit better than the stock ones, also.

I posted this back in 1999 when I upgraded the system in my 944. There might be more speakers that work now, and it's possible that the one's I mention aren't even available anymore...either way, hope it helps!
---
I did a lot of research when looking for speakers to replace the stock 4x6's in my 944 (w/ power windows.) In addition to comparing the listed specs for the stock speakers to those on the shelf, I went to a local car audio specialist and actually tried to wedge in all sorts of different 4x6's (both metric and standard.)
Unsurprisingly, I found that the door depth is definitely the toughest dimension to satisfy. Some speakers were listed at less than 1-3/4" depth, but wouldn't fit because of an odd-shaped flange on the cage. Others would have fit fine if it weren't for the placement of the magnet structure too close to one side--this was most common with 4x6 plates I tried.
In the end, I personally tested only two speakers that fit in the front without modification. I'm sure there are more that exist, but in searching online and in several local audio and electronic shops, these are the two that I got to work without modification:
- Lanzar CX 46.2 ($55, Audio Warehouse)
These are some solid 2-ways built like a tank, and the power handling is rated pretty high for a small speaker (100W). Unlike most 4x6m's these came with a speaker grill, which was necessary to gain precious depth for mounting them in the doors. I had to remove the rubber surrounds from the magnet to get them to fit, but they made it in and sound great--the highs really sparkle!
- Kenwood KFC-4625 ($70, Crutchfield)
Make sure you get the 4625 and not the 4620, which are the standard 4x6's. I haven't permanently installed these yet, but they fit fine out of the box and sound great.
As another poster mentioned above, they now have the KFC-4628 which are about $30 more but are part of their elite "eXcelon" line. As far as I can tell, they only offer one version to fit both standard and metric 4x6.

Here you can see the Lanzar CX46.2 mounted with its accompanying grille. I think it looks pretty good, but I tend to catch my foot on it when getting out. I'm planning on moving these to the back and using the stock grille to cover a 4" component speaker in the door.

The stick is kinda in the way but you can get an idea of how the Blaupunkt Nevada (same as the Alaska) looks--very OEM, in my opinion. I also love the volume dial, because I can rest my hand right next to the stick and spin it back and forth with one finger.
As for that old fader **** in the console, I'm planning on wiring the sub gain control into it.

I used the blaupunkt speakers. All you need to do to make them fit is shave off the plastic rim on the speaker grill. This makes enough room for the speaker to fit.
It doesn't look like it will fit, but take your time and snug all the screws together, it's as close to stock as you'll ever find. (It does bulge the smallest amount, however it is not noticeable unless you are looking for it.)
Do a search in the archive, there are others who have used this speaker. I believe the speaker is PCIx762, but you will probably want to double check that.
