Default alternator problem at the fuse box

About a third of the way through a 200 mile trip I noticed the voltmeter dropping slowly from 14 to eventually right to the bottom, though I made it home without incident.

The voltmeter shows about 4 going into the alternator. Bypassing the fusebox and running right from the battery to the alternator shows well over 12 on the dashboard voltmeter however.

Could it be a relay causing me grief? And if it is, which one? I've read somewhere that the alarm system is tied in to this. Could that be the problematic relay?

Thanks for helping out a rank amateur.

if you take the screws holding the fuse panel in you can pull it up- disconnect battery first- and youll see where the other positive feeds tie into the front of the panel- check the connections.

Thanks, had taken the fuse panel out but still wasn't able to figure out which relay was the relevant one.

(I should have mentioned its an '88 951.)
