Crankshaft pulley removal
I got the crankshaft bolt off my car last time (thanx to a piece of rope in the #1 cylinder!), but I haven't removed the pulley. I'm going to work on it this weekend (if I don't freeze my @#^ off first) and need to know the best way to get it off. Do I need some kind off puller?

yes, you need a pretty big gear-puller available from sears or the local autozone. I tried to do it with a cheapo gear puller, with a big screw driver, and with a pry bar before I broke down and bought the nice one. Just buy it and save yourself a lot of trouble. HTH

Removing the crankshaft sprocket with a puller.
See the Haynes manual, page 61, figure 8.25
AutoZone has a rental program were you pay the purchase price for a tool and get the money back when you return it. I know they have pullers on the tool rental chart but I am not sure of the size.

Get some PB Blaster brand penetrating oil and soak it down. Makes the job MUCH easier. I wouldn't be surprised if you could pull it off with your hand afterwards. Of course have the puller on hand just in case......

Try the loan-a-tool program at the local parts house, like Autozone. They have pretty much all of those special tools for your use without having to purchase something you rarely use. Just wish they had the majic tensioning tool.

The easiest way to remove the front pulley that I have found is to unbolt the alt drive pulley first. This will leave 4 holes in the bal. shaft pulley. Use a steering wheel type puller, screw two 6mm bolts into 2 of the holes and pull the gear. The cam belt drive gear can be removed with a large pair of channel lock type pliers and a hammer. Grip the lip on the pulley with the pliers and tap them with the hammer.

I agree with MTH. We could not get the two and three jaw pullies to work. Also you are going to have limited depth between the pulley and the radiator to work.
If you have a drill press, cut off tool, and a large tap you might want to make your own puller using one of those cross style tire irons from the local junk yard.
1. Cut ends off tire iron so that cross is barely wider than the pulley.
2. "Mill" four slots for the 6MM bolts using the dill press.
3. Clean slots as necessary with a file.
4. Drill large hole in center of tire iron. 12 mm should work nicely.
5. Tap hole with fine threads.
6. Get matching grade 8.8 or better bolt from hardware store.
