Default flywheel lock alternative?? (TDC)

i came across this tool on 9xauto.com. im looking for some sort of alternative for the flywheel lock. im just hesitant to remove the starter

Need to install flywheel lock by removing a starter?
TOO MUCH WORK!
Do not bother. Just use this gadget to stop the piston. Install your positive stop device into the spark plug hole and extend the bolt. It will stop piston from moving.
WARNING do not use the starter motor or you will put a hole through the piston. Can only be combined with a tool above. Not sold separately.

i am going to update the top end of the motor like the head gasket, injectors, seals, etc. and i am looking for alternatives to the flywheel lock, but then again if im taking off the head, i figure this type of tool would be useless in my case. this is for my automatic 944.

would this be an alternative to the flywheel lock or is it useless?? i think its helpful in looking for TDC for cylinder one, but i can just use a stick in the plug hole....

Removing the starter is easy on manual cars. Not sure about an automatic.

just as easy on the auto. No difference at all.
It takes no time at all to get the starter out once the car is jacked up.

The mark on the flywheel is pretty handy for finding TDC, too.

I balked at the cost of the flywheel lock, was going to make my own, and after looking it over, decided there was more to it than meets the eye. Well worth the amount they charge.

Agree also, the starter is an easy job unless one of the bolts gets galled (happened to mine).
