I can't say you really beat the ticket ,they still got their money that's the part that pi$$es me off about the whole deal.

I got my first ticket since the 80s last year on my bike, had a carload of kids on my *** with their stereo bassing away , the light went yellow and in the interst of my safety I downshifted and gassed it to clear the intersection more quickly and recieved a "yellow light violation" still had to pay the $, lame traffic school that I could have taught better. I didn't consider that beat at all.

Amaf,

Isn't the moral of your story that knowing a cop makes all the difference?

Seems as though your Dad's cop friend saved your bacon...which is no doubt a good thing.

Either way, knowing someone "on the inside" helps more than any degree of polite butt-kissing behavior ever has.

Hmm, interesting point. Do you think a geo metro will do just as well as my Porsche on the track?
Get real. The streets aren't the only place where you can drive fast.

I assumed this based on the number of posts to this board that refer specifically to top speed reached, usually on public roads, or regarding drag racing from light to light. In my opinion, that is reckless.

I got my first ticket two weeks after I received my drivers licence at 16 years old (20 years ago), 54 in a 25 mph zone. I deserved it.

I received my second of three total tickets in a neighborhood I did not know well in Cleveland (12 years ago). It was icy out and I was speeding (late for work). I deserved it, but I should have fought the ticket because the police officer was out of his jurisdiction and was hiding in somebodies driveway without their permission.

I received my third and final ticket 10 years ago outside of Gainsville, FL. The officer first clocked me well over 80 in a 65, but by the time he recorded my speed I had dropped to 72. Again, I deserved it.

Do I drive now like I should be driving an econo-box as you say? I don't think so, but I do drive carefully and am respectful of the areas through which I am driving. If I do engage in "spirited" driving it is in secluded areas that I know well. I am really tired of pencil dicks in hopped up Civics and such hauling *** through the neighborhood I live in (25 mile an hour zone with children and dogs and squirrels, oh my). And I get really tired of ****** in SUVs or 996 Carreras feeling like they have something to prove when they get near me while I am driving my car.

I have been stopped unjustly in the past 10 years, but I knew the law and stood my ground and the officer relented. In one case the officer figured I was a boy-racer (when I had my VW) and could push me around. When I stood up to him, and he checked my record (0 points, no stops on my record, 32 years old at the time) he changed his tune and let me go.

I don't mean to come off as saying let "the man" push you around, but jeez, take your licks and admit when your wrong.

[quote] BTW: PreryDog: there is a great different between driving 13 over the speed limit and driving recklessly 13 over the speed limit. Not judging you or your driving, it's just that cops normally don't stop people going 13 over the limit, but they do stop reckless drivers, regardless of how much over the limit they are.

Z-Man: Move to Virginia. I can name at least a half dozen people that I know who have received tickets for less than 5 miles an hour over the speed limit, and I can assure you, these were not done recklessly. Some states are different. When I travel on down to TN, I can fly like the devil and not worry about the cops. When I'm in PA, the cops don't bother me at anything under 15 over. When I'm in VA, well, it sucks.

My statement was much to the same as others around here, just because you're speeding (or rather, just because you're CAUGHT speeding, because EVERYONE speeds, intentionally or not, everyone speeds), does not mean you were driving like a spaz, deserve a ticket, were endangering others, or in any other way should be considered a bad driver.

Sorry, but this kinda attitude pisses me off.
John, maybe you should be driving a geo metro or somesuch econo box if you can't control the speed a performance car offers.
Flame away.

Ok: it is true, sometimes there are officers of the law that take the letter of the law too literally. Unfortunately, they have every right to stop us if we travel over the speed limit.

Here is something for you to ponder: have you ever tried a track event or an autox? I can truthfully say that since I've gotten involved with both, my street driving has slowed down. Why? Very simply: if you get your kicks driving on a track at 130mph on the straights, then driving 100mph on the street is no big deal.

After getting nabbed recently with a 6 point speeding ticket by a cop with a laser gun (with no warning from my Escort 8500), I have decided to leave my '89 951 parked in the garage except to drive it to DE events or other open track days.

I spent all day driving in a responsible manner while a#$#%holes in SUV's tailgated me and routinely drove 15mph over the speed limit. I slipped up once on a wide boulevard unfamiliar to me with a ridiculous low 30mph speed limit and was ticketed! Sure I was exceeding the speed limit (35-40mph), but I was not going 55mph and there were no other cars or pedestrians present.

I knew I shouldn't have bought a red Porsche. Oh well, it's impossible and idiotic to drive the car to its potential on the street, so I'll just be going to the track on a weekly basis. It's more fun to play with 911's than be hounded by fat SUV's anyway!

Tickets are nothing more than a reminder to keep your speed down. The more tickets you get the tougher the reminder becomes in the form of license revocation etc. Ive never had a beef with the cops nailing folks for speeding as long as its clearly not in a 1/8 mile 45-35-45 speed trap or egregiously thin like 5mph over. Too many folks drive like they are out to prove the size of their Herman. My gripe has never been about cops nailing speeders.

My beef is about all the other stuff that never gets ticketed. People not moving into the far right lane for faster traffic. Folks entering the highway at 35mph in an effort to kill them, you, and everyone else within a 1/4 mile. People who have no clue about school bus dos and donts. And folks who turn on red when the sign says you cant, while others dont turn when theres no sign saying otherwise.

The ABSOLUTE WORST habit of American drivers though is improper use of the turn signal. Drivers either signal too late, or too soon. You are not supposed to signal for a turn until you pass the last street or major turn-in before your turn otherwise the guy behind you thinks your going to turn here, no wait, ok now here, no wait, maybe the next street. I've been nearly T-Boned at least 5 times because folks had their turn signals on and I pulled out in front of them thinking they were going to turn on my street, only to find out it was two streets down they were going to turn and they keep barreling down on me while blowing their horn. Then I proceed to give them the finger and ask them why in the hell they didnt turn when they clearly gave the indication they were going to. How in the heck am I suppose to know you are going to fly through three streets before finally deciding youve had enough and want to turn. At the same time, as soon as you pass the last street, you signal to give those all around enough time to brake. Obviously if two streets are 10 feet apart a little practical judgment is needed but I find this area of driving to be the most misunderstood part of courteous, defensive-oriented road manners. Combine it with speed and look out Ma.

OK. I feel better.

They can keep the money just aslong as I don't pay higher insurance rates. The only way a person can get away from things these days is if you have a relative who's a cop, and can pretty much get you out of everything.

I never race unless it's for something important. For example, this was pretty stupid, but I was justified for doing it:

I went to go see austin powers on saturday with a bunch of friends, we took two cars, mine and a friends honda. We just watched the movie, and it was around 2:30am, we were going down the highway. I was behind my friend in the middle lane doing the norm. speed limit, and another honda pulls up to my friends car, and we can see everyone screaming and shouting. So, my friend drives off in front, and I pull up to the guy. We start yelling at the guys, and we flip them the finger, so they tried to knock my car off the road. My friend came from the side, and we had him blocked in. We forced them to stop in the middle of the highway, and we were ready to pull them out of their car and do what we had to do. They pull off, and drive off.. we get back in, and follow right behind them. Finally, we're fighting on the highway with our cars, my friend tries to drive them off the road, and we pretty much had them ****ting bricks, so they pulled off the next exit, and the end of story. In no means was I trying to be the aggressor, all of my friends agreed we were to tired to start trouble, and that they started it for a reason. But you should have seen their faces when they seen we had two cars instead of one.

Amaf based on the story you just posted you are a moron! Where is Bates when we need him?

Yes I am an old fart. Old enough to know an idiot. You are dying to end up a statistic. If you don't grow up fast you may never grow up.

BTW when did Craig move to NJ?

Jeez, how did this guy ever get his license?

Who was it that was complaining about my assumption that folks getting tickets may be driving recklessly?
