Cool Oil leak fixed, shimmy problem found

Well it was a wonderful day for wrenching on the
car today. Got the oil cooler seals replaced. By
the look of what came out they have never been
replaced. "O" ring arround the oil bypass valve
hole was hard as rocks and just broke apart when
I took the thing apart. Not a difficult project
but MESSY thats for sure. Also 2 cans of engine
cleaner to get all the oil off the bottom of the
car. Which brings me to my second dilema. Noticed
a bit of shimmy at arround 60-70 mph. Well when
I had it jacked up, wiggled the wheels and found
that the right tie rod has about 1/4 inch of play
where it attaches to the rack. Hmmmm Ya think that
might be the problem? Also with all the oil I've
been spewing the last couple weeks I have oiled
down the right front break caliper pretty bad,
braking pulls car to the left now. Think it will
burn itself out in time or is it time for brake
pads too? And maby some SS brake lines while I'm
at it. Where is a good source for Tie Rods?
Checked Pelican but didn't find em listed. Car is
an 83 with manual steering. I need the right
tie-rod and rubber boot minimum. Thanks for
listening to my rambling all.

something tells me that tie rods might not be your problem. i had .7 in of play in my manual tie rods after i first put em on, with no noticeable shimmy other than out of balance wheels(the steering was a little loose as well), it didn't appear due to the tie rods... i got tie rods at GPRparts.com (german parts and resto) they were the only ones who had the tie rods in stock, and cheap too. i hope tie rods fixes your problem, do em both at the same time and get it over with, you'll never have to worry about em again!

mike - enjoying the manual steering

I also would replace them in sets. Performance lists the 83 complete tie rod for $114 or $99 depending on the Chassis #...looks like they changed the part in 83 model year.
