Extra-Life Motor Mounts?
I'm looking for a warm weekend to work on motor mount replacement. In the meantime, I'm thinking there must be something I can do to extend the life of the new mounts...
1) Coat the mounts with a paint designed for flexible surfaces, protecting the rubber against oil and other harmful fluids? Or perhaps something like Plasti-Dip ( http://www.plastidip.com/consumer/products.html )
OR
2) Soak in a silicone treatment and treat periodically after installation?
AND/OR
3) Invent some supplemental heat shields that would bolt in or around the mounts?
I really am not looking forward to this job, so if there's something I can do to save myself from doing it again any time soon, I'm game.
What do you think? Has anyone tried something like this or is this an original idea?! Worth an experiment?

I just noticed rattling while at idle today - it may have been there a while due to the fact i re- did some vacuum lines, is this a sign of bad motor mounts? at 1000 rpm idle seems a little noisy.

Signs of bad motor mounts are more noise at idle and some additional vibrations. The keys is that the vibrations go away at higher rpm's.
As for treating and extending the life of mounts... dunno. I would like to hear some expert's opinion on this.

BTW 924superwagen- thanks for letting me pirate your old avatar- i loved it. I get a some vibration during idle- but no noticible "noise" like rattling - its hard to tell, it just seems more than usual.

Preventing heat from getting to the motor mounts will increase the life. Some people wrap their headers to decrease heat inside the engine compartment; this is especially important with a 951. I don't know what material they use to wrap the headers with though.
The factory mounts seem to be the way to go as well. The aftermarket mounts have been known to become bad in a very short timeframe (1 year) resulting in another replacement.

Aluminum Foil ... yeah, baby!
There are several folks out there using header wrap on the mounts - not sure what amount of life you could expect from that, but it certainly wouldn't hurt.
A whole roll of the header tape would be relatively expensive, so think of getting a smaller quantity of similarly constructed muffler repair tape (fibre type).
Also, leaking oils on the rubber mounts will shorten the life dramatically. The power steering reservoir is a culprit in many cases.
Finally, the factory mounts are definitely better than the aftermarket.
Good Luck!

RJP 951 what part of NE Ohio are you in? I also had similar questions about the longevity of motor mounts, Mine need to be replaced this season. I guess we could always go with solid mounts! might be a bit harsh for the street but may still be a distant option.
