Default 944S with weird Power Steering issue!?!

Alright so I've looked around the forum and I havn't found any problem like this...

My 87 944S runs great for about 25 minutes, after which the power steering starts making a LOT of noise when I turn the wheel. It is really loud. Also there also a pretty strong vibration sounding noise which comes into the cabin through the dash and really bothers me!

It's been doing this since october and I've tried new belts/tightening them, new fluid, just put in a rebuilt steering pump, and the PO put in a rebuilt rack about 7k miles ago.

Thanks.

I would have guessed that the PS pump was going bad but you just replaced it. Could it be air in the system? Also, what fluid did you add.

Lines, replace your lines with the newest updated ones out there..or take it to a hydraulics shop and have new ones fabricated (tell them it is for power steering so they will use re-enforced hose)...

Specifically start with the reservoir to pump line..it collapses and chokes off the supply of fluid to the pump...

there are other sources...

I was reading about this collapsed line issue this morning, but I wonder why it would only cause a problem when the car was hot! Check out these pic's, the lines are pretty old! (While I was there I took one of the ole 16V fire breather!) anyways my mechanic (Cheech @ Rennwerke) says it can't be the rack (no leaks there!)

Thanks guys~!

Engine heat plus suction on the line... takes the line some time to soften enough to collapse... change it out and see if your problem doesn't go away...

I envy you 16V motor, but like my turbo charged one too much to give it up... maybe I should find myself a nice 16V turbo?

Yea I'll think about DIY'ing it, just got it back from the shop getting new tensioner pads put in (something to think about if you want to get into 16V's) and the rebuilt pump. They polished up the Cam Cover, which I can't figure if I like or dislike...

About turbos, cool but IMHO you just cant beat the looks of the 85.5 NA, just perfect.

I have both, but am partial to the Turbo front valence... plus the boost is SOOOO addictive...

I agree with collapsed line. Same symptoms on 2 different 944's, although they made noise and shook the car regardless of the engine temperature.

Jay W: was the problem the 'Pump to Reservoir" line on both cars?

Yes it was. There is a clamp that holds the hose to the waterpump and the hoses were sucking shut in that location since it has been compressed in the clamp for 20 years. Taking the clamp off and putting it back on during front seal and timing belt maintenance seems to have sped up the problems with that hose.

Right and I just put in a new PS pump... ok great I'll be doing that as soon as the part gets here. Maybe I'll take the old line to a "hydralic" shop like john suggested.

Ok thanks!

Multiple sources on the net say one should replace this http://www.rennbay.com/power-steerin...f469811828035d whenever you do steering work... worth the $20 or w/e?

Can it just be flushed (permanent screen-type filter)? I would think that it would be hard to suck so hard a line would collapse UNLESS the screen was plugged.

Replaced the Res/filter and pump to res line and this seems to have solved the problem. Now the true test, englishtown tomorrow.

Thanks so much for the help!
