I for one would buy a Boxster. I liky my car but it is not the end all-be all of Porsches. It is a nice car that was GROSSLY over priced when new. Many people on this BBS are biased with regards to the 944 series cars. I like them, but they are NOT the best cars Porsche has ever produced. Each Porsche model has its draw backs and it assets. Say what you want but the only reason that late model 944's (951 and S2's) have maintained a relatively high value when compared to apparently low value of the Boxster is the due their high price orginally. My S2 Cab stickered for $52k in 1991. A 97 Boxster averaged about $48k. In inflation adjusted dollars that $48k had significantly less buying power. Personally, I am not a fan of the 1997 Boxster in particular due to the weaker suspension parts (i.e. no 18" wheels allowed) and some of the cheaper interior pieces. But for $20K it still is not a bad deal. You must also consider that fact that the average life expectancy of a convertible top is only 7 years. So that is an upcoming expense for any older Boxster.

I am rambling now. I just don't understand the anti-boxster sentiment that is occassionally presented on this BBS. Some of the opinions in this thread remind me of some of the complaints that 944 owners have expressed regarding 911 owners.

Just my $0.02.

There were less than 6K cars like your S2 cabrio built worldwide. With so few units produced, that in and of itself called for a higher sticker price to actually recoup the 2-year development cost of the cabrio. It's a rare car. Period.

Porsche has cranked out up to 25K Boxsters in a single production year. I'm not saying it's not an excellent sportscar, which it is. Just that its "marketing heritage" isn't doing it any good when there are literally thousands to be found everywhere.

I don't know about you, but when I take either of my cabrios out they are definitely viewed as exclusive cars. Boxsters are nice, but they're about as common as 3-Series Bimmers.

Beyond what Luis had said, I think that the depreciation of the price of the car is in large part due to the demographic of the Boxster buyer.

The market is riding high, life is good, my retirement portfolio looks good, then the bubble bursts.
Oh ****....I'll sell the third car, cause my net worth just dropped by 1/2 to 2/3rd's and tighten my belt. Along with how many people???

If I had room, Id seroiusly consider a Boxster. A Porsche ragtop is a fine summer vehicle and the Boxsters by and large are reliable vehicles. Any time you can step out of a 1986 car and into a 1997+, you are going to see major improvements in technology. I dont think the Boxsters are great performance cars, but they do excel on the twisty stuff, looking handsome with a nice set of rims, and lets face it, Porsche ragtops are cool especially for under 20K.

I would definitely jump into a 2003 Boxster S if I had the dough (which I dont now or ever). Probably 4/5 the car of a 911 at 2/3 the price. Then again if I had enough dough for a 911, I would just freakin get a 911, but that could also be said for a 911 GT2 so where the hell am I going with this. Uhhhhhhh...........

Id love a nice used black Boxster with black leather and some non twist rims with relatively low miles for under 20K.

I wonder how much it would cost to get into a used Boxster S, using a mid-hi level mileage car as an example, from the first year of S production?
Also the hardtops, these were optional I presume, how much does one cost?
