btw, as suggested it's quite possible to pack 4 wheels in. following stoogemoe's suggestion, i did it and took a pic. as u can see, there's still room for a couple of medium size rubbermaids and the cubby's are still empty. hooray for hatchback storing power!

I'm tellin ya.....I could never do that. Where's the tent, folding chair, cooler for water, etc going to go? Plus the lower left (driver's rear) corner in my car has the wiper motor hanging down from the hatch...so whatever goes there has to be REALLY small...

Now that I've got the hitch, I'll be building my own tire trailer from a small utility trailer.

Will post pics when complete.

I may be going the tire trailer route for the Chick car sometime in the future. Normally, I'm going to Summit Point which is a 45-minute drive. No biggie on track tires and I don't need co carry a lot of stuff. Next weekend I'm going to VIR (~4.5 hour drive), my wife is coming with me and it seems that everyone who I had hoped could haul some extra stuff for me won't make it. Oops.

Anyway, when I get around to doing this, I've read on Miata.net that many people have done really, really well with cheap Harbor Freight trailers that run about $180. They're bare trailers so you'd need to get some plywood for the floor and a box from Wallyworld or something. It's also small enough that I could stash it on the lower deck under a cover so that the HOA probably wouldn't even notice.

I spent about four years driving to the track with four tires, jack, toolbag, jackstands, etc, etc in the rear. All four fit kinda flat, the front two were angled up onto the cage tubes. These were 15s with pretty low profile tires.
Works pretty well. And I only had to do the AAA thing home twice.

As promised on the eve of my Watkin's Glen event, here's some pics of how I get everything into the hatch.

Here's the stuff that goes in the hatch.

The jack goes in the spare wheel well. The fluids and stands go in the cubby holes. Here's a shot of how I get the wheels in there. The one you can't see from the back. It's in front of the tool bin. I have a pretty good view out the back with the only blind spot in the right rear.

Here's how that hidden tire fits on the back seat. Notice the Rennbay sticker on the tool bin. Travis would be proud.

The helmet and stuff is on one back seat, the power bleeder is on the other rear seat. The cooler and clothes go on the passenger floor and anything else goes on the seat.

Looks like there is quite a bit more space once the virtually useless rear seat is gone.

My jack is a larger, costco alum. one that won't fit in the spare well....and I take the following in addition to you:

One more Rubbermaid tote..has all the cleaning and numbering 'stuff' in it.

Compressed air tank

Small sun tent

Small, soft cooler with wheeled stand...gotta put the water in something !

So earlier in the month....I did also pack a spare tire...one rear, unmounted tire.

I still actually had some room to spare...but no where near enough to put another tire in the car......unless of course I were to remove the back seats.....but that's where my co-pilots (son & daughter) sit on regular weekends !
