Question Speaker?

Could someone tell me where online to shop for speakers for my 1989 944? I found some rear speakers but as far as the front speakers go, I can't find any.
Also, where can I get replacement grills for my front speakers? One of mine is cracked and it keeps falling off.

Thanks,

Steve

I put MBQuart speakers in my front doors. They are made in Germany and have titanium tweeters, and claim to be hand made, so they are not cheap, but MBQuart makes a european mount 4x6 so they fit right in the door. A cheap online retailer is "www.thezeb.com". I bought mine from a dealer because MBQuart will not warranty online sales

Steven,
I've bought most of my stuff from www.crutchfield.com. They have knowledgeable salespeople, and their prices are reasonable. I like to hit their sales and 'scratch and dent' specials. You're going to want a 4x6, most come with grilles, too.

Question

I checked out crutchfield and the web site said that for the 1989 944, no front speakers were available. It also said to call them, that they might have some other recommendations.
Why can't almost any 4 x 6 speaker fit? Are some too deep or what?

Not all 4x6 are the same, The european 4x6 has a different surrounding mount plate than a domestic or japanese 4x6, Most european speaker companies (Blaupunkt, MBQuart Becker) make at least 1 european mount model. I know Boston Acoustics makes a 4x6 eurpean mount but I found the sound to be poor.

some 4x6's have larger magnets, bigger baskets, and therefore varying mounting depths...crutchfield should be able to tell you which speaker fit the 944 doors, then you can shop around online for the best price. in addition to www.thezeb.com, try www.sounddomain.com, www.ampmanaudio.com, www.audionmore.com, and of course ebay.

good luck!

I replaced my mummified, crumbling stock 4x6's with some Polk 4x6 2-ways (about $90). They're pretty shallow, so they fit in the stock holes. They didn't come with grilles (or really any provision to mount grilles), so I used a really thin bead of clear silicone sealer on the stock grilles and just glued them to the door panels.

I like the approach 'cause it maintains the factory stock look. They sound a LOT better...so-so bass, but the vocals and high notes come through really clear.

Good luck!

Red face

I tried 'thezeb.com' and they even said that they had no speakers for my 944. Whats up with that? I know that many many companies make 4" x 6" speakers but almost everyone i've contacted say that they will not fit in a Porsche 944.
Please, if anyone can help me out here, I would greatyl appreciate it. I have exhausted all my leads.

Thanks,

Steve (1989 944)

Steve,

Two weeks ago, I installed Kenwood 4x6s in the fronts. I bought them from Crutchfield, the model number was Jxc or something like that(car and paperwork are at home). They stuck out a tad from the factory holes, but I remedied this by placing plastic spacers behind the door panel, which pushed it out enough so as not to be noticable(no huge bulge and no gaps) and allowed me to re-use the factory grills(which is what I wanted to do). The spacers came with the Blaus I ordered for the rears, but any generic spacer will work. As for a replacement grill--Partsheaven, Ian's autoparts, 944 ecology--any of them should have a used factory grill to replace your broken one.

Clint, if you are still out there... Were you able to maintain your stock grill covers while using MB Quart 4x6 speakers?

I have been told that MB Quart sound quality is excellent; however, the speaker depth of 2.38" may be too great for the 944 front door.

Anyone using MB Quart in the front?

I second the Polks. I have the 4X6 Plates in the rear, and a 4" Round component set up front. Toss about 70w to each speaker and they sound very good.

For that bass.. you need some subs.

perry - do you have pics of your front setup? Did you mount the 4" components in a plate in the stock location?

It looks like MB Quart 4x6's are indeed too deep.

Polk EX462a 2-way speakers have a depth of 2 3/16" - which is presumably also too deep?

Grrrr. There should be a list somewhere of the best speakers to replace the OEMs in the front door. (That's right, all 3 of them! ;-))

Agreed. I think it depends on just how stock you want to stay. I don't mind using the RadioShack grills, but I don't want to do any cutting...

Clint, did those MB Quarts just stick right in there? I have a pair of Polk 4x6s that are 1.875" (1 7/8") and they did not fit in the front doors. The magnet hit the door metal.

There are numerous threads about this if you do a search on this forum. Not so many hard answers.

The only real problem is the mounting depth. Stock speakers are 1.625" (1 5/8")...I'm hoping someone will say "I put these speakers in and they fit perfectly" or "I put these in and the only problem was the tweeter protrusion" or "I tried to put these in and they hit the door...

Also, www.sounddomain.com seems to have a wider selection than Crutchfield, but Crutchfield is usually cheaper.

For the ones in the doors, just drill some new holes where the basket meets the door. For the area around it, since it is a 4" square, toss some Dynamat (removed here since I had to get into the door)

I mounted the corssovers in the doors. There are some holes towards the middle front of it. You can zip tie it to the door and it will not get in the way of the window. (3 of them, drill an extra set of holes.)

For the tweets, pick a nice spot and mount them with the 2 small screws for the caps, then snap the tweet in it.

Since the grilles are round, head on over to Radio Sham, and get the chepest set of 4X6 speakers they have (made by Realistic). The grilles in them are perfect. Pop off the Polk emblem, the Realistic emblem, get the glue out adn presto, it fits perfect on the door. And that bent in part is where the old emblem is, goos thing, because if it was not bent, you would need to so it does not hit the door. When the door is closed, you cannot see the bend, so it looks pro. Other than that, I think it turned out nice. Excellent sound.
