I know clarks recommends it and a couple people here have had their studs snap (manual tensioner cars with stud) so i"m wondering if I should get it replaced.
I have replaced the belts and rollers and water pump etc all myself but I don't want to attempt to remove the stud myself. I was told by a few people that the stud is probably seized in the block by now and if I try to replace it it might snap when trying too remove it. this is the reason I don't want to do it myself because it if it snaps it will be a huge pain to fix.
all the mechancis i've talked (porsche mechanics) told me they never hear of a stud snapping and that it must be pretty rare.
I've looked at my stud a couple times and it was not corroded and didn't look damaged.
the bolt behind the tensioner had come loose once however when my mechanic shop adjusted the belt for me and the belt was riding forward on the pulleys because of that so I took the tensioner out and I loctited the rear bolt on the stud.
also my engine has about 270,000 kms on it.
i'm asking because I'm going in for a timing belt retension (been like 4000 kms since I changed it) and wondering if I should have the shop also replace the stud.
they told me 3 hours if it goes well and nothing breaks.

no the stud has never come loose. the nut behind the tensioner which goes on the stud and fastens against the block had come loose and moved forward causing the tensioner to also move forward and the timing belt to ride forward.
the mechanic shop that tensioner my belt (porsche shop) didn't notice this and when I got my car back the belt was running on the edge of the cam pulley and they told me not to worry about it and its normal.
I took the tensioner out later and saw the nut behind the pulley had come loose and I put loctite on it and tightened it and the belt now rides centre. the stud was not loose however.

i'm guessing most people here and other 944 owners have never replaced the timing belt tensioner stud on the manual cars and if they were likely to break you'd here many more people complaining about failed tensioner studs.
i'm thinking of just leaving the stud and getting my tension checked and maybe replacing it after december when i'm done school and have lots of time to do it myself.
